I was thinking of buying a used core 2 duo since it seems like the best deal (~10 us dollars on ebay) and I know programming doesn't require that much , but I remembered that c2d's don't have integrated graphics (i have to buy a gpu) and its an older cpu so it takes more power (more money on psu), and a lot of the lga 775 motherboards look like they came from prebuilts and some of them are seriously sketch.

Now I think if I buy a more modern cpu with integrated graphics that doesnt take a bunch of power and a reliable motherboard, it may be the better deal?

Please tell me your opinion and if 2gb of ram is enough?

I think an i3 with hyperthreading and an igpu with 4gb of ram shoudl be more than enough.  If you really want dirt cheap, get a Q6600 with 4GB of RAM.

Depends what you're programming for, 2gb will be enough for some others you'll definitely want 4gb.

If you're only doing programming and nothing else, then I don't think you really need to worry about more than a couple cores, but make sure it has hyperthreading. As for RAM, if you're looking at bare minimum then you can probably get away with 4gb, but I would recommend 8gb. When you're compiling code the storage speed is going to be the biggest factor, so the more you can drop on a super fast SSD, the better.

I use a core 2 duo and 2gb of ddr2 in a build pc for comptech and it runs win10. Arduino takes a bit to initially compile , but same thing happens on my ivy bridge pc and surface so it's probably my board.

I've E7500 and 2GB of RAM. It's going fine here with coding! :)

Get an i3 4th gen, and 4GB of RAM. That's enough.
