used i7 4770 dark smudge

Go to solution Solved by Majestic,

I've seen this a couple of times aswell. On brand new ones. Don't think it's an issue.

I just bought a used i7 4770, and I noticed a dark smudge on the connectors.
Should I be worried?
I cant test it yet cause my board hasnt arrived yet

HEEELP THANKS!

Probably a little thermal paste residue. I would clean it off and should be fine. CPU's are pretty tough.

At least it wasn't on the pins. Those things are nightmares.

I tried rubbing it with TP, to no avail :(

it looks like a slightly burnt part of the shiny gold things

If the CPU still works then don't worry about it.

I've built 3 PC's, but none for myself... In fact, I'm using an iMac that my dad bought for me as my desktop. Awkward...

Please don't say "SSD drive." By doing so, you are literally saying "Solid State Drive Drive" and causing my brain cells to commit suicide. The same applies to HDD (Hard Disk Drive) and PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express).

Looks like it could be a burn.

Ask the previous owner if it had an OC.

I always thought that was when someone touches the pin contacts with a bare hand and the grease had tainted it?

That's what I always thought it was, I've opened up brand new CPU's with it and never had an issue (my current 2500k had it brand new and has been one of the best chips I've owned).

What I mean by grease is fingerprint grease/ oil, not thermal grease/ paste.

Well, we can't eliminate everything.

The orig. owner could have OCed it to the point where the MoBo said "haha nod"
