Fallout 4 Cpu bottleneck?

The game has Vsync on by default, so you're locked to 60 FPS. If you're hitting 60 FPS but capable of higher, then you're not going to see 100% utilization from anything.

Isn't it the same engine as Skyrim? It probably is somewhat platform-bound, if that's the case.

The CPU might be thermal throttling but I don't know if AMD CPUs do that. An AMD FX8350 seems like a pretty good processor. While you are running the game, check in task manager maybe on a second screen and see how much CPU usage is being used. Also update graphics card drivers, maybe there are updates out already. My personal rig is a 2600K with a GTX 760 and Fallout 4 runs fine around 30FPS on Ultra (not sure about antialiasing).

OC isn't possible since the cpu already has overheating issues

i know it isn't since aida64 benchmark runs fine with the furmark dealing with  the gpu's and not getting throttling.

a while back i had this issue but solved it by undervolting a bit.

Steam friend has an amd fx8350 with a 970 and he's never going below 60fps.

 

 

Doesn't fall out 4 recommend a 9590?

I'm running lower specs at 30fps (vsync on) with everything maxed out. EVERYTHING.

 

 

I get 100% utilization of my 390x at ultra on 1080p, with about 144+FPS, all 8t of my CPU are at 20-40% most of the time.

 

Quick update the problem is most likely to do with the cpu since if any gpu settings are changed it just holds the 24 fps mark.

Your problem is that fact you have a 290. Fallout 4 only runs well on Nvidea GPU's, AMD GPU will have performance issues until AMD releases a driver update to deal with it.

well alright but why do the people with 270x run at 30 fps and i at 24 fps? also my cpu cores don't matter i just disabled 5 of my cores of the 8 and my fps doesn't even change....

Because the game is optimized for a 970. Check this out

What settings? Go into Lexington and see what happens with everything maxed out. A 970 will and not drop a frame. Can you?

Right as soon as I figure out where that is.

I branched off and did my own thing pretty much right away.

Didn't work for me, nether did removing the second card. But it is worth a shot for the OP.

nope don't but in that video they are getting a lot more frames than i do kug kug 24 fps

Oke just fixed it by setting my hyperthreaded cores in the .ini file to 8

it was on 4 but my cpu has 8 cores.

this resulted in my cpu going far higher and my gpu always at 99% instead of 20%

So you're no longer stuck at 24 fps? I was figuring it was a vsync bug and that you were using it on an HDTV or something whose lowest supported refresh rate is 24 Hz. Crysis 1 has a bug where vsync defaults to the lowest supported refresh rate on the display, so lots of people running it on HDTVs were capped at 24 fps with vsync on.

sorry, i'm not very active recently on the forum.

its located in the C:\Users\<yourname>\Documents\my games\Fallout4 and then the fallout4.ini file in there the iNumHWThreads should be there if not add it to the general section. the iNumHWThreads should be the same as the total thread count of your cpu so a fx 8350 has 8 cores but no hyperthreading so it has 8 threads and a i7 4960k has 4 cores but has hyperthreading so do the core count times 2 and it has 8 threads.

 

so the core count of cpu and if your cpu has hyperthreading do your core count times 2.

well its not great still but it works WAY better than before instead of locked to 24 fps it bounces around a bit from 17 in city's to 100 fps indoors
