I been thinkin of upgrading my system from the HDD(72000RPM) I been using as a boot for the past five years, to a SSD. Is there much a performance difference between the Samsung 850 EVO compare to the pro. Been lookin at the the EVO 500GB (which is on sale on Newegg) to the Pro 256GB

Don't buy the PRO.  The only advantage it has is faster read/write.  The EVO is fast enough.

Not enough to matter. You are going to be BLOWN away going from HDD to SSD as it is. If you have the extra $$$, doesn't hurt - but in most cases the evo is just fine.

Get the Evo for most people the pro is never needed, it's more capable of taking more writes for durability if it's being heavily used for writing or dumping files to for editing or work constantly which most users won't come by.

That's not the reason to not buy a PRO.

The PRO uses MLC nand which has a higher write endurance than TLC, and less performance degradation over time.

This is very useful in professional scenarios where you are writing dozens of GBs per day to the SSD.

This is also why it is much more expensive than the cheaper TLC nand EVO.

BUT for a regular consumer who just games and uses normal programs the EVO SSDs will be far more than enough, and it is unnecessary to spend more on the PRO version.

Pretty much, PRO is use for server computer or systems that move massive files, and the EVO Is just your normal everyday use SSD. (lame-man terms that is)

So I won't kill the SSD for having music going, Firefox, and a few heavy programs(like Photoshop and a 3D model program) running all at once?

Only thing I'll be using the SSD is some of the main programs I use and the OS. I have my games off of a different drive

If it can boot my system faster and shut it down faster, I'm happy.

Well not necessarily for servers, those have datacenter-grade SSDs which are even more advanced

but for what you will be using it the 850 EVO is more than enough and will last you decades

the performance difference between the EVO and PRO is unnoticeable

~snip~

Hey there Fuzz_Ball,

The performance jump from a HDD to a SSD is more than noticeable. Generally larger capacity SSDs perform better compared to the lower capacity ones. There should be a comparison On the manufacturer's website between the speeds and the features of these two SSDs. For everyday usage the difference in performance will be nearly unnoticeable so I'd suggest to go for the larger capacity one . :)
