Teaching Middle Schoolers Tech?

You should really try and include some programming too.

 

Software jobs are a lot more common and don't require high-level qualifications like a lot of hardware related jobs would plus the skills that can be acquired through programming are a lot more transferable to other areas.

 

Finally, I assume any lesson will require a risk assessment. Building a computer may seem easy to you but electricity can kill and there is no way you can be certain any used parts you buy haven't been tampered with/damaged. In the UK any electronic device in a school/office has to be tested to ensure it meets safety standards.

I'd like to...but I know nothing on the topic myself.  If I focused my free time on that between now and then, I might come up with something to add, but extra free time is hard to come by.

 

If I do this, and I get used parts, I will most definitely play around with them first.  A little 12vdc shock is gonna hurt the parts a whole lot more than me. ;)  But you do bring up a valid point about the risk involved with used parts.

So I help out some at my high school (i'm out of college now) with some random stuff.  It's a small private school so really only the essentials are taught.  They are going to be doing a week in the Spring where they pause the normal subjects in favor of a variety of random topics to introduce students to new things and maybe get them interested in what they might want to do with their lives.

 

One example...they're bringing in a guy to do robotics.  The one time I wish I was still in high school!

 

Anyway...they asked me if I could teach some sort of "techy" (their word) course.  I told them I'd think about it.

 

So my question to you all is, what would you suggest is a good starting point to teaching middle school aged kids about tech?  I'm no expert myself...built my first pc just a year ago and learn little bits and pieces here and there as I go...which I love but I clearly am not equipped to teach very many things.  I could probably sit in a class like this as a student...I've got plenty of questions  :P

 

I'm thinking...maybe introduce them to PC parts...maybe have a PC torn apart that they can put back together to see how all the pieces fit?  It needs to be simple....but they're all already somewhat computer literate so I don't want to dumb it down to the point where they're bored.  But I could easily do that in an hour.  I'd have four classes (therefore 4 hours) to fill.

 

Any suggestions?

Don't teach them tech, they'll use it to make DIGITAL CLOCKS for gods sake ! /s

ya go online to find some cheap used components set them out, talk about the basics, let them build the computer and see if it will turn on in the end giving them the satisfaction of "hey i built a pc today and it wasnt actually that hard to do" and thats what would really start them off if anything

A town I lived at in Missouri had a vocational high school that they would have all the elementary students go to each year as a field trip where students could look at different classes such as welding, cooking, IT, and auto-motives. I remember going on the field trip there. Of course there were plenty of other specialized classes to check out. 

 

The instructor there showed us and explained to us what some computer parts did and how they worked, before showing us a mineral oil computer in back that was running Linux. This is what got me really interested in computers.

 

It's definitely a great idea. Maybe bring some extra unused or dead hardware to show the kids that parts can have lots of variety; such as coolers, RAM, and motherboards.

My procrastination is the bane of my existence.

I make games and stuff in my spare time.

Get an old PC and a new one and show what changed and have a fun little graphs. Then let them take it apart and put it back together.

I remember going on the field trip there. Of course there were plenty of other specialized classes to check out. 

 

The instructor there showed us and explained to us what some computer parts did and how they worked, before showing us a mineral oil computer in back that was running Linux. This is what got me really interested in computers.

 

It's definitely a great idea. Maybe bring some extra unused or dead hardware to show the kids that parts can have lots of variety; such as coolers, RAM, and motherboards.

ya my school does tht too, they call it trades day, they bring in kids from middle school and bring them to our shop clases and they get to make little things and see what the shops are about, our highschool mainly has auto,welding,woodworking, and film production along with music,not too much tech, i went into the video class when i was in grade 9 and i told some kid about a graphics card in the older mac pro we have and he got excited and said "wait a second the teacher has to hear this", it was like a whole new concept to him and he was in grade 12 xD

Yeah, that's essentially what they're going to be doing, only at the school itself.  I'm really glad they're doing it because while the rest of the education is really good, they just don't have the students, nor the resources, to have much beyond the basics.  This at least will get them introduced to some new things that hopefully will get their interest going.

I wish I had experience in this stuff then too!  My "Tech" experience back in high school equated to learning how to use Microsoft Office at a basic level... lol   I really started to get into learning more about year ago...but I always feel like I'm playing catch up.

thats what i was refering too, that kid actually makes me mad, hes a fraud, he says he made a clock when clock makers have looked at it and pointed out many things indicating that its a clock from a store that he took apart yet he gets all this praise on how hes a genius.. its sad for the people who actually work hard and have a passion for clock making, and i seriously cant trust him after i seen the interview and how he explained that hes used to building stuff and he makes and solders cpu`s all the time no big deal, like really ?

The article I read said he does get electronics and mod them, it just said circuit boards, so dunno. Maybe modding one little piece at a time is where he is getting his start ?

Definitely have them build a pc together. Don't stand there an define wtf a Gigahertz is. Don't talk about factions (AMD vs Intel) but rather talk about nanometer processes and explain Moore's Law

No worries on AMD vs Intel.  I think taking a solid stand one way or the other is ignorant...so even bringing up the idea that there is "one side or the other" isn't even an option for me.  If they get to the point where they want to build their own PC some day, they'll have to do their own research to determine which one is better for their own needs.

 

 However I do think nanometer processes and Moore's Law is a bit more technical than I'd be looking to go with this class.

So some news...  I recently discovered that the week they are doing this special week of classes will not take place as I had thought.  I THOUGHT it would be in the afternoon...might replace one or two classes for a week.   Instead, they are filling up the whole morning with these classes...for a whole week.  So not only would there be a lot more time I would have to figure stuff out for (though that's very doable), I can't make it work with my full-time job.  Which is a bummer because I was looking forward to it!

 

So in that light, thanks to all of you who contributed!  It was really helpful and for my first real post in the LTT community, it made me feel welcomed!
