So my desk is an old, cracked sort of color

It's bigger, with two sets of drawers on each side. In y'alls experience or opinion, would it be worth the effort to stain it to a darker "richer" color?

No get a new desk from Ikea or something. Unless you love the desk or you are broke

Besides, I love the old thing :P

Ok then

Get a low grit (Maybe 120?) and sand it down to bare wood, then get a finer grit (Maybe 250?)

And then stain it however you would like.

I say sand it and stain it as dark as you accept to be pleasing to the eye. It would look great, and it is still a fine table, so there isn't a need to buy something new.

If you want to refinish it and stain it a darker color it's a fair bit of work but not too hard, I recommend using paint stripper to take off the original finish first before giving it a light sanding to make it all clean and smooth before re-staining and finishing it.

You'll have to sand it, you definitely should do that outside and with mouth/nose protection. You really don't want to breathe in old varnish or lacquer. If you are happy to put in that kind of effort then yes. The hue of the stain is up to you. You might also want to think about sealing it with a clear finish to protect it for longer.
