Fun (And expensive) Intel CPU Experiment!

Hi all!

 

So, I have an interesting predicament I find myself in.

 

Long story short, I have a Skylake i5 6400 that has had one of it's corners be physically bent while being jammed into the incorrect socket, followed by a boot attempt (1150 vs 1151).

 

I have managed to 'un-bend' most of it, and am thinking of buy a cheap H110/B150 board to test it just to see if it works! Personally, I'd be shocked if it even boots (or does anything except lay there dead), but I thought it could be fun! I have had ok results in 'fixing' broken cpus in the past, for example bending back nearly 100 pins on an old Phenom II then having it 'work' for a year (crashes a plenty :()

 

I havn't tried anything like this before, any tips from anyone that might give it a better chance of working? I realize it's probably a lost cause, but hey, why not?

How does one put a CPU in the wrong socket?

The same way I can install a Xeon into a modded LGA775 board the wrong way.

This, is why you do research before handling CPUs :P

Yep, there was a slight mix up in the parts that were ordered! You'd think after building lots of PCs I'd notice the H81 on the box wasn't B150 :( rip

I totally didn't click the board was incorrect. Seemed to fit fine! :P

What happened to the CPU and motherboard?

Motherboard got rekt, the Xeon is still fine (I destroyed the socket-I'm glad that LGA775 doesn't have pins on the CPU the way AM3+ does).

I have never seen a dead CPU. I have seen lots of mobos die because of bad PSUs, but not CPUs.

I bent the pins beyond recovery-as for killing a motherboard deliberately-it took a Pentium 4 at 2.2V on a motherboard with a non cooled 3 phase VRM
