Thanks guys - think I will pick up an Xbox One Controller and get the wireless adapter.

I prefer a controller for any third person or platforming game. KB/mouse is only good for some FPS and the obvious RTS/MOBA genres imo.

As for which, currently nothing beats the DS4 on PC, imo. It's got way more functionality than any other controller out there. Well, except it lacks the paddles of the Xbone elite, but fuck paying an extra $120 for that.

I haven't used a PS controller forever...I would be a lot more used to the XBOX controller.

I notice there is a Steam controller coming out...will this be any good?

It's gotten very mixed reviews, mainly because of the touch pads. TBH it's hard to beat either of the wired XB360 or bluetooth PS3 controllers for PC usage, if you're on a budget. Hardware wise, the controller hasn't changed much if at all since it was unveiled.

I don't have one but I reckon it will beat the Xbone controller once you get used to it. It has more precision with the trackpads and you still have the left thumbstick for more traditional analog input. Seems a lot more flexible.

For the moment I still use an xbone controller but will probably order a steam controller or two.

I havent used it for much more than dark souls so far, but it has currently become my controller of choice for dark souls over 360,xbone, and DS4.

I'd suggest checking out some in depth reviews on it. Not sure where you live, but I think the game retailers valve partnered with(gamestop for example) may have some set for demoing, so if applicable check it out.

BTW if you decide to check some videos do make sure they aren't quick overviews. Those don't do the controller justice. Plenty of people have glossed over, or outright ignored the configurable settings. These settings will make or break usability depending on thw game.

More functionality how? surely it functions the same as the xbox one/360 pad

if anything its annoying because the button prompts are wrong, and its not plug and play

It is plug and play either through USB or bluetooth (no BS dongle required), it has a fully functional touchpad, and with DS4Windows or Inputmapper you get full remapping even for keyboard input or media keys, profiles with automatic switching, and macros. And you don't need Windows 10 to get wireless connectivity, and you don't need to shell out an extra $90 to get the remapping with the Elite controller.

Sure, the only annoyance is that only a few games here and there do show PS button prompts, but that's a very minor issue, really.

I'd say the steam controller has it beat on functionalities, and likely will continue to. Valve has done a great job listening to feedback and adding more features. To to add to your point compared to 360/xbone, the DS4 does have similar motion controls to the steam controller via gyro and accelerometer, though I've never used it and have no idea how well the DS4's are.

Does it still rely solely on community profiles that may or may not exist for the game you want to play? Does it have a proper d-pad now?

Now, while it is true the steam controller can have more functionality than the DS4, using that thing just reminded me of the Xpadder days. Not the best experience. Also that plastic feels like it could break just from gripping it too hard.

Generic templates have been there the whole time. And the dpad isn't much of a counter point since it does 'have' one. Its like the 360 controller, it exists but isn't as good. Functionality wise its still there.

It feels just as rigid as the xbone and DS4 pads next to me. Only the back grip plate feels like it could break due to normal excessive force, but really its probably going to hold as well as pressing any controllers' face buttons hard as balls with the only force against you being the pcb.

I guess, though I just remap my controls from within the game, (honestly I never even do that, they are always set up really well)

but the button prompt thing annoys me, since I swap between PC, Xbox, PS a lot so having the correct prompts matters
