My Zotac 980ti AMP! Extreme that I dropped 700 bucks on is whining like crazy lately even while idling, really high pitched almost out of hearing range I reckon but I very much dislike it.

Actually have had 3 different power supplies on this card and the same thing. I'm wondering if Zotac will let me RMA this thing on account of coil whine? Newegg won't RMA but I think Zotac will.

You can always try, but usually coil whine isnt covered under warranty as its not actually a faulty card, its just a noise :c

Why would that eliminate coil whine?

You are driving the coils quite hard and they pretty much "wear in" so to speak from the heavy load. The windings vibrate around a bit (which is where the noise comes from) and then eventually make themselves happy. I am not sure of the exact physics behind it, all I know is that it will usually help, in more ways than one ;)

So gaming for hours upon hours won't do it or benchmarks?  It has to be this folding thing to fix it?

Folding put a much higher load on it than most games or benchmarks.
