Nvidia vs AMD

Go to solution Solved by i_build_nanosuits,

390 with the beefiest cooler you can find...make sure you get at least an i5-4460 CPU or better though.

...and at least a good quality 600W PSU minimum.

Also, if you want gameworks features in games or physX, or VXGI, texture compression, shadow play, gamestream or MFAA...get the nvidia GPU.

The AMD is around 4% faster and has more memory, but it consume more energy and won't support any of these modern rendering techniques and features that maxwell does...so it's a trade off you must be willing to make to get a few more FPS here and there, it's up to you!

AMD is alright i owned many AMD cards and they have served me well, but nvidia is better across the board...but if you compare the prices AMD quite often offer a stronger card for the same price so you have to make a choice...i prefer nvidia that's why i bought a Gsync monitor...also buying AMD at this point IMHO is a HUGE guess because they can go bankrupt or sell out at any moment now and that would mean end of any support for AMD gpu's and end of driver updates for the card which would be a bummer.

I don't 60 fps on all games on max settings. I am fine with 40 - 50.

both the GTX 970 and R9 390 can max out game at 60FPS 1080p in most cases...easily.

My build consists of an EVGA supernova 650w gold and  an i5 4460.

with that CPU i would not be surprised if the 970 would react better than the 390 under DX11 games...AMD DX11 drivers are very CPU intensive they have a lot of overhead and when paired with a lesser CPU they tend to tank really hard in clutch moments...DX12 drivers for AMD so far have shown the AMD GPU taking back their respective rankings though but the performance remain similar...what would worry me a bit is the 3.5GB of VRAM on the 970 in the long run might limit you to running high texture settings instead of ultra texture in some games later on though, but usualy those texture sets look just as good so long as you don't have to put them on ''low'' it looks good...i don't know there are pros and cons to both to be honest...any chances you might go to 1440P and buy maybe a gsync or freesync monitor down the road (cause freesync monitor are a lot cheaper than Gsync so that's a plus for AMD...so long as they continue existing and pushing out GPU's though...otherwise again you might end up with an expensive useless freesync monitor.)

right now, this is what would worry me about going AMD

Thanks guys. I think i will be getting an MSI gtx 970 due to the lower power consumption and better cooling

Lower power consumption and less heat because (afaik) NVIDIA cut so much out to have low heat and power consumption whilst boosting clocks through the roof.

then lets think about what would happen to Nvidia if this would happen...

nvidia hold 80%+ of the discrete GPU market share right now and they are sailing on ships made of gold and diamonds...it aint gonna happen anytime soon...but if it would yes that would be just as terrible...i leaved through that once when 3DFX was bought by nvidia and the cards stopped receiving any support what so ever by the game developpers and i had to rely on user created drivers to keep it going a few more months...horrible...

eh i wouldn't try and buy into the whole amd is going to go bankrupt thing. First off we don't know when or if amd will go bankrupt, so not buying a amd card b/c you are scared if amd is going to be bankrupt is ridiculous in my view. Secondly, alot of people say that if amd does go bankrupt it will be in 4 to 5 years, by that time alot of people are already looking for their new gpu. Thirdly, if amd does go bankrupt someone will buy them, and they will most likely keep on providing driver support for past amd gpus.

Also, people are also saying that NV has been having a habit of planning obsolescence for their past gpus for each new generation that comes out, but is that a reason to not to buy a NV gpu right now. NO it isn't.

So, don't be scared of buying a amd gpu, just because people are saying that amd might go bankrupt at some unknown time. Buy the gpu that is best for you.

i agree, it's nothing definitive and i hope i didnt sounded like it was...but it's something to consider i was the proud owner of a 3dfx GPU when they sold out to nvidia and it was a big let down for me so now i do consider this as a possibility for AMD...and guess what: nvidia provided absolutely ZERO support what so ever for past 3dFX cards and same goes for game developers...Glide was if it has never existed and if you want new drivers buddy good luck here we have some user created super non-stable drivers for you to try. anyways...like i said, just something to consider.

BUT, also about how long it might take for them to go under...i would assume they will AT LEAST launch a rebrand of the Fury and FuryX in the R9 4XX series with HBM2.0 they will at least want to get some return on investment on this and rebranding them one time is the way to at least get some of the money they sunk on this back...so yeah at least 2 or 3 more years i would see them last and if Zen turn out to be good and priced competitive maybe longer than that.
