Take a look at this website by Google. It explains it simply without a bunch of words no one likes reading. Really nice actually.

Also I am wondering if I have a website how can I move it to the top of the search engine?

You need to pay Google to set your website as an adsense site to display at the top of similar search result pages. It costs a shit load.

Google is your friend here. There are a lot of different things to have in mind like info in meta tags, ssl, no malware (obviously) and so on. But if you want to find different tips and guides I'd recommend searching for Google SEO tips/tutorials. (SEO = Search Engine Optimization).

EDIT:

To check your website for various different things, you can use a service called Sitebeam.net. They check and make sure you do certain things to help you fix your website. Normally it costs but they have a trial that works fine. http://trial.sitebeam.net/

Web crawlers, then those pages are indexed.

To decide what's displayed in your results, and in what order, an algorithm is used (one that's too complex for me to understand lol).

Probs the best explanation you'll get ^^

I believe it was BMW who just filled their pages with 'invisible' keywords in order to boost their rankings (other sites have done it too)

If you're asking in reference to making a site, there are various ways to optimise it for search engines, scuh as alt tags on images (simple yet effective)- as that's something web crawlers pick up on

Paying is the easiest. Another is to get indexing bots like the ones that cover this site. Third would be to use whole lot of common tag words.
