Hello everybody,

A friend of mine found this MacBook pro in a dumpster. It looks new and in fine shape. Brought too me but I have no experience with MacBook.

First thing I did was open it up. Inside I found that the hard drive was missing and that the cable too the battery was disconnected.

I replaced the hard drive with an old one I had laying around and reconnected the power cable. After a short charge I pressed the on button.

It looked promising. A small light on the bottom flashed short and the speakers gave the classic sound a mac gives at startup. But nothing happen on the screen.

The screen stayed as black as ever. i checked the inside of the MacBook while it was on and found the fans spinning. So they work fine as well.

It seems that there is just something wrong with the screen. Any tips on how to fix it?

i plan on trying to connect it to an external screen by thunderbolt too see what happens then and hopefully see what the exact specs are.

Here are some photo's too maybe help.

It's most probably the gpu. A new chip will cost you not to mention you don't have a rework station. It's mainly happens due to Apple policy of 90+C before coolers start to spin max. I'd recommend selling it on ebay as it is impossible to repair it and a repair shop will ask 600$ for it.

Hold a flashlight up on the screen, see if you see anything, the backlight might be broken.

Plug in any USB drive, hold the alt/option button and turn it on, see if you get a boot menu.

The recovery partition is also on the boot drive so if you install a blank drive it literally won't do anything, just a black screen.

This. I have seen many screens where the backlighting is poo, but with the right angle you can see that the LCD is functioning.

Taking a leap here, but have you made sure the display connector for the screen is still attached?

If the battery and hdd were disconnected, then there's a good chance the display is too.

i plan on trying to connect it to an external screen by thunderbolt too see what happens then and hopefully see what the exact specs are.

Here are some photo's too maybe help.

Disconnect all of these https://gyazo.com/59eeb448493b69dff0ca6d8f7fc2b172

Try and get some known good RAM if you can, if not just leave one stick in there.

Connect it to it's magsafe, and hit power.

If the screen comes on, one of those components is likely failing. If not, then you're looking at logic board failure.

The good news is, that macbook is currently under recall for a GPU issue.

If there are no dents or visual damage, take it to an apple repair location, and they will be able to replace the logic board free of charge.
