Funky GPU

So i have an AMD 7850 sitting in a box right now, its there because there is a problem with it. i got the GPU for free from my friend because it had stopped working, and i wanted to see if i could fix it. after a good several hours of troubleshooting and replying thermal paste i had gotten the thing to work perfectly except for one thing... there are 3 green streaks going down the display and it jumbles up whats in them. so im wondering is there any way to use the gpu without use the display or hdmi ports from the GPU?

As far as using it to power your graphics without using one of its display outputs? No.

If you wanted you could probably use it purely as a folding slot for F@H because you can set it to fold without using it as a graphics driver, but it might not be reliable for folding because it's probably a memory issue.

Sounds like it ran too hot for too long. Try oven reflowing it. Basically, heat the oven to 375f, take the heatsink off the card and peel off any stickers, put the card on a tray using 4 balled up pieces of aluminum foil to keep the card from actually touching the tray, and pop it in for 8-10 minutes. Might smell bad, might not. It also works in a toaster oven. Ask me how I know.

 

First you could try underclocking it to see if that does anything.

Sounds like a memory issue.  And before I leave this, I just wanted to say that when I saw the title "Funky GPU" I said to myself "I bet it's an AMD" before even reading the topic.

This would be a decent thing to try (what have you got to lose OP?), but if the memory's confirmed dead then there's not much this will do about it

unlikely. Try underclocking memory way below stock speeds, that might help.

you may be able to find a service that can replace the RAM, but i doubt it.

 

as for crossfire, the cards need to have the same amount of RAM, and if the RAM on one is ded, i wouldnt think it would work

I'd remove the heatsink and check for damaged/burn damage.  If the board under that doesn't look right then you're not going to get full functionality.  Green lines are related to memory issues.  Putting it in crossfire can slow down the main card in the crossfire doing more of the work rather than increasing as it will cause a bottleneck in the crossfire.  The memory doesn't double, minus in dx12 applications, but there's still a slow down of information/a bottleneck.  You could try reflowing if there is minimal damage otherwise your only maybe option is a reball.  If that fails and the board is too damaged then you'd need to just give up.

if the memory has failed, then how does it run at all? i mean videos and such work just fine, yet to try a game though

It hasn't failed, but it could be damaged.  That's why you want to check the board for damage.  This happens to backward compatible ps3s.  Same green lines as the gpu part of the board has burned up and caused vram damage.  If the damage continues, if there is any, it will get worse in time.  You can only fix it with reflows and reballs, or possibly not at all.  Fixing this issue is like playing the lottery.  The more you run it without fixing this = damaging it more.  And, if you were to crossfire it, as I said, there would be a bottleneck.

luckily its only been ran once after the problem had occurred. so maybe ill look into reflow and reball. i might just give up and use it to fold lol

My above post has been edited telling what you mostly need for each.  But, you also have to completely remove the plastic/cooler because 650 degrees F is going to melt plastic.  The reason is you're fixing solder joints.  Also you will need to remove the coolant off the die before doing this or that will damage the processor part of the GPU.  So, make sure you have replacement thermal compound handy.  Your main focus of reballing and reflowing = the solder joints.  Heat messes with solder joints which is main issue overheating gpus.  Heat messes with solder is part of why.  But, you want the solder joint to have a solid connection for the components to work properly.

ive removed the cooler once before to re apply the thermal paste, so it shouldnt be a problem. but now im debating if its even worth buying a heat gun

Honestly, you can get a 250x asus refurb from newegg for around the same price the hassle of a heatgun, flux, and reballing kit would end up costing you.  In some cases even a 260x if used.  Personally, I'd just get the 250x or 260x unless you can afford a 270x that is = to that funky GPU.  The problem with reflowing and reballing is that you're playing the lottery with it becoming fixed or not.  You either just wasted a bunch of money to fix it, or it could be dead.  It's completely 50/50, and up to you.  Just saying that I'd personally just get a new GPU.
