we just got a 90,000$ virtual shell

My school just got a "virtual shell" installed on our stage, as our previous physical shell (those things to project sound out and such) burned down.

The virtual shell uses a system of microphones and speakers to re create the shell sound. We are going to use it today.

From what I can see, the speakers are Yamaha. Hard to tell, they are on the ceiling above the stage, but like like Yamaha logo. Microphones I'm not sure, but they appear to be high end, and on shock mounts. Can't wait to use it. It's very interesting.

Yamaha make monitors?

EDIT: I'm assuming it's not display monitors...

Yeah. Yamaha makes a lot. Wind instruments, speakers, motor bikes. But not displays :)

Well it sounds good.I honestly can't tell the shell is made of speakers, it sounds like natural sound from the orchestra, not speakers.

I hate to sound kinda creepy... I'm not really sure what a virtual shell is. Do you mind posting a picture of the setup or from the net?

Yeah, I'll take a pictureTomorrow or look for one later.

It basically replicates a physical shell with speakers and microphones

What exactly is a shell? Like a turtle shell?

Like a thing around a stage to project the sound forward, and allow people on the stage to hear each other

Wow that's pretty fancy stuff

Yeah, it must be some pretty crazy hardware to get the virtual shell to work with 0 latency, as it need to be exact.

And it actualy works really well

Hard to believe this is cheaper than building another physical shell. I suppose it must be a lot more versatile, e.g. for different size ensembles, sound reinforcement and so forth.

Yeah, there are different settings Depending on the group. the school probably also had extra budget in the music department to blow.

I would have gotten cellos that don't look like a knife attacked them, but budgets are weird

What do you mean by "virtual shell"

I understand what you mean by the shell bit as the arch building stage, but what is a "virtual shell". Does that mean you don't have the arched roofed stage.

Right, it uses microphones and speakers to replicate a real one

So its just a incredibly expensive sound system for a school.

Kind of

So whats so special about this sound system to make it cost so much.

Well it uses microphones and speakers so everyone in the ensemble can hear each other with no latency

Thats just a sound system. I dont understand what a "virtual shell" is and what the difference between a "virtual shell" and a normal sound system.

The Dick of the audio page!

Well it plays back for the performers, and projects the sound out. And actualy i think it was more like 75,000$

So it is just a sound system and a load of boundary microphones.

And it can be calibrated differently depending on if its the band, orchestra, full orchestra, choir, ect.

There are a bunch of monitors hanging from the ceiling of the stage, along with microphones. And then speakers projecting out.
