I've just been looking around a bit, checking out display overclocking. I know what I need to do it, but i just wonder if there's any real risk? Just something I wanted to try out, I plan to only do it in 1htz increments, but I'm just wondering if there's any warning signs I should look out for while doing it. Haven't done it before, so I just want to know if it will give me any kind of warning if I push it too far.

Overclocking in general has risks attached to it, namely killing your hardware. Going above and beyond set manufacturer settings is always a risk to everything inside of a PC.

I know, just wondering if its a different thing to overclocking say a CPU, as generally you can get a decent overclock on it without any problems.

Generally for displays watch out for any overscan, underscan and of course the out of range message. Had my display running at 80Hz ever since February this year and haven't had any issues yet. You could get away with a 5Hz increment but if that causes you display to go out of range then don't worry as it resets after 10 seconds or so.

I got my Syncmaster P2570 from 60hz to 75hz, which made a pretty big difference (less strain on the eyes). Just make sure there are no artifacts on your screen and you should be good. I tried to push 80hz but my screen came up with an error "this refresh rate is not optimized for your monitor". So most likely it will tell you your limits.

I see, well, I will give it a shot, in 5hz increments and report back what I get!

Just look out for artifacts, or anything out of the ordinary (pretty precise, I know). While overclocking anything has its risks, with monitors its pretty black and white. If it accepts the refresh rate, and looks normal, then it will likely run fine for a prolonged period of time at that setting.

I managed to get it to 75hz before it gave me the warning. It did work at 80hz with no artifacting, but I had to close the warning message. As I'm a student and can't exactly afford to get a new monitor, I figured its best to leave it at 75. The difference is definitely noticeable.
