I am out in the country and during storms and snow the power can be spotty to our house.  I was seeing if anyone had any personal use of the furman line and if it truly improves upon sound/video and provides quality protection from outages and surgers?

If you have straight power outages a UPS would be a good choice for that but if it's just bad quality power and the power rarely goes out in your area a conditioner is a good choice for smoothing things out.

I have seen my church use one on the amplifiers, but they generally just filter out electrical noise. Proper quality electrical parts already do this, and my amp does suffer from noise, but I fixed it by wrapping my audio cables in grounded tinfoil. So tbh, unless there is a very electrically noisy environment, I cannot imagine a huge change in sound and video quality, especially video since it is pretty much digital these days.

What is bad quality power?

Power quality is basically looking at the voltages and sinewave of power that comes from the wall in terms of AC power where poor quality power can vary a lot from the set 120V or 240V or have a poorly graphed sinewave which conditioners can help correct to some degree.

For DC power like in a computer PSU you want stuff like low noise and ripple to ensure good qulaity power to the components in your system.

And whats the benefit?

Depending on how bad your power is for certain equipment it's more sensitive than others, it helps mainly with lifespan and sometimes with audio equipment ensuring a good quality signal but most devices theses days can correct for the majority of brownouts or issues with bad power to a certain extent.

I think the power can't be so bad that someone could hear a tiny difference.

My homamade amp used to make pops over the speakers every time say, the tablesaw was started outside. They are usually uses in industrial applications where lots of high energy things are being used to protect the smaller, more sensitive equipment.

If this happens redoing the houses wiring is probably a better idea.

Most of the time it's the power from the grid that the problem where they either have outdated equipment, random surges or loads on the grid. Wiring in the home does affect it at times especially if it's a really old home.

you got something against non grounded knob and tube wiring?

I can't believe that this is any problem in a non third world country.

It mainly depends, say if someone in the house was using a high current appliance or tools it can cause lights to dim in small scale or if your far out in the country power outages are not uncommon. However it is less of an issue say in some other places in the world where their infrastructural for the electrical grid is lacking.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have dealt with some rough/bad power situations before.  My go to solution has always been just using a low-mid tier UPS.  Something in the $100-150 range should be plenty, doesn't need to be super fancy but don't get the cheapest thing out there.  Always resolves my problems.
