4 displays dont work on 390x

Pokemonking81
Go to solution Solved by samcool55,

so how would i go about hooking up 4 displays then

(sorry for the dumb question)

You have a 4790k, that's good because you can do like i do. :P

Go into your bios and enable Intel Multi-monitor or something like that. Maybe a good idea to take a look in the manual of your motherboard, it's probably in there telling you where it is.

When that's enabled, connect the 4th display to one of the motherboard outputs (the monitor you don't want to use for gaming) and install the intel gpu drivers from here: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/81496/Intel-HD-Graphics-4600-for-4th-Generation-Intel-Core-Processors

And the good thing is performance in games are not impacted by this :) the iGPU takes care of whatever gpu tasks are running on the 4th monitor. So if you are playing a video on the 4th screen or whatever. It will have 0 impact on your gaming experience, unless it's very cpu intensive and the gpu has nothing to do with it. But then we are taking about a different scenario.

edit: and btw, that's not a stupid question. You are not the first one that asks this and not the last one either. There is nothing wrong with asking something :) If you have questions about tech just ask! We are here for you to help.

so i picked up a 4th monitor so i can have a eyefinity setup and one overhead display and the 4th display doesn't work unless i go to screen resolution and turn one of my other monitors off

I have a XFX 390X. I'm using all the ports on the card. Am i doing something wrong?

Thanks

K, just making things clear here.

The chip can output 4 displays, probably all cards will have 4 display outputs.
That does NOT mean they all 4 work AT THE SAME TIME.

People will say "it's not true blabla", prove it. Take your gpu and plug 4 monitors on it, i can say now most of you will discover you actually can't do that.

So, the reason why it's usually limited to 3 displays:

Most gpu's have 3 chips that take care of taking the output from the gpu and transfering it to the monitor output.

Now, what most manufacturers do is connect 2 of the 3 chips and connect them to 2 outputs, result is that every combo with 3 outputs will work, but all 4 of them won't work at the same time. Because there are only 3 controllers to take care of a display. And who would ever try to use all 4 of them, right?

Most of the time it's the top DVI port that stops working when you connect all 4 displays btw.

So you can connect 3 monitors, but the chance you can use 4 at the same time is like really small, even if it looks like it should.

I believe you need to use a display port hub and have 1 via HDMI, 1 via DVI and the rest over display port.
