980 for 1440p, 144hz gaming?

Hey guys, I am going to slap a 980 in my rig, I have 16gb of Ram, and a 4690k. I want to know if I can run 1440p at 144hz with that set up? 

 

I like to play AAA titles, and I don't really care about ultra settings, what I really need to know is it I will be able to take advantage of a refresh rate higher than 60hz. 

 

I plan to get an HBM pascal card in the future, which is why I am not going with a 980ti 

 

EDIT: No AMD cards, I use gamestream too much.

You would have to turn down the settings pretty low at that resolution for it to hit 100+ consistently

Play them,  yes. 100+FPS with good settings? No, not in recent AAA games. You're looking at SLI setups with any current single GPU cards to get the benefits of 1440p 144hz right now.

On medium settings for most games.  A 980Ti is suitable for 1440p at 60Hz, pushing 144Hz on a 980 is going to be tough.

980 at 60hz is fine I allways got more than 60 99.9% of the time. If you want to get above 100hz get a 980ti I get above 60 at 3440x1440 with mine

Man cheer up....Although a single 980 really can't run most of resent 3A games in that fps...But I can tell you for example, you can run GTA5 in very high setting and without MSAA and scale in advance graphics,you can actually get a consistent 60fps if you turn on Vsync.But 100fps or above?That's not gonna happen except you can stand the idea of turn your settings to low...But I don't think a guy with a GTX980 can play a game in low setting of you know what I mean. According to my experience a single 980 can play games perfectly in 1440P,60fps and the graphics will still looks great, but 144hz? That's too demanding

a 980 will have a hard time maxing out games at 1440p, let alone pushing 144Hz. You NEED a 980 Ti for either one and for both you need 980 Ti/Fury X SLI/CF

Depends on the game probably. My current game library is limited to BF4, Bioshock infinite, World of tanks, Skyrim and Diablo 3 at the moment. The most taxing of those games is BF4, and my g1 gaming 980 does just fine with it on an ROG swift. I'll get around 85 to 120 FPS on ultra with 2xmsaa, with it averaging around 90-95. At that setting I see a noticeable improvement in smoothness of gameplay over 60hz. Above 100 FPS the difference seems to decrease, and above 120 its not really noticeable at all to me.  So the 980 is right in the sweet spot for bf4 at 1440p to me.

 

More demanding and shittier optimized AAA recent console ports like GTA V and Witcher 3 probably don't fare as well, but I don't think high FPS are as important for those games.

 

For me personally, id go 980 and save for pascal and get the better monitor now, as the 980 should do the trick for games at the moment unless you have a need for maxed out settings. In fact that's exactly why I chose a 980 and an ROG swift. I'm baffled by people that spend tons on the top of the line GPU like a 980 ti or even Titan X, then buy a so so monitor that cant really take advantage of it. Using a 980 ti for 1080p is just idiotic.
