GTX 980 ti with 3570k

I guess it is pretty overkill, but it's, dare I say it... futureproof

You could say but you would be kind of holding the card's true performance it's intended for but if you want it then go for it

Hi all,

I'm considering buying a 980ti to replace my current setup, my current cards seem to crash because the driver stops responding and successfully recovers. So I decided to drop AMD and go for Nvidia.

Is there any obvious problem with upgrading to a 980ti with my current setup? I'm not going to go SLI in this Mobo's lifetime

Current setup:

  • CPU - i5 3570k
  • GPU(x2) - r9 280x
  • Memory - 4x4GB
  • PSU - Corsair GS800
  • Mobo - AsRock z75 pro3
  • CPU cooler - h100i

Thanks

AMD drivers sucking dick...not surprised.

Setup looks fine.  You could probably drop down to a 650W PSU without issue if you wanted.

What resolution and I presume AAA games?

(Also do you run any overclocks on the 280X)

Currently 1080p (IK it's overkill for that), but either 4k or 3x1080p in the future.

Yep, BF4, ACU etc...

I currently don't run any overclocks on them because they crash even faster if I do, I actually have them underclocked from the OEM rated speed and they're still unstable.

Probably just got a bad card.

980Ti is pretty overkill. I would consider a 980 for triple 1080p or a 980/390X if you want 1440p eventually

The only issue is the PSU - GS are mediocre and I'd look into something a bit better quality when putting in a 650$ GPU - maybe Antec High Current Gamer 620M?

As for your issues - I'd guess it's a faulty card - it happens :/ - What brands are the 280Xs?

Is the PSU that bad? I don't really want to re-run all of the power cables.

I even seem to get crashes (although much less frequently) with either one of the cards.

What brands are the 280Xs?

The cards are Sapphire Vapour-x OC,

The chances of both cards being duds are slim - might be the PSU

@Roshy

What happens if you run a single card?  Removing the second card completely.

I still crash, but only after 4-5 games (BF4). Instead of the 5-10 mins it was with two cards.

Have you tried it with each card separately?

Maybe only one card is bad.

Yeah, I have, which lead me to believe it was the drivers, but even after completely reinstalling them I still have issues.

Last attempt...

Have you tried another GPU in the PCI-E slot?  Something other than the 280Xs?  Maybe the motherboard has issues.

I haven't got another GPU to test with, however I know it's not the motherboard because I broke that and ended up replacing with a different model.

note: always make sure the PCIe clip is undone

That's a shame, those are good cards. :(

Well, best of luck! :D
