HD-7970 cooling.

Writing this post on mobile.

OK. You guys were great answering my last question.

How about this one?

I have a Sapphire 7970. Great card. No issues. Other than the cooler..

Sob story- I bought this card on Craigslist and everything was fine and dandy. Until I turned the computer on.. One of the fans wouldn't spin.

Long story short, after lots of troubleshooting and research I couldn't get the fan to spin. Lucky me. I called the guy back, and he never answered calls or texts. So, I knew something was up. He knew! What an ass. But this thread is not about him.

My solution to the fan was totally rational- I ripped the fan off and glued a random 80mm fan onto it. I'm a genius.

The card idles at 50°C, and VRMs and 41C. That's okay, but it gets up to ~75°C under load, VRMs at 64C. I don't like that. Also, it's loud.

I can't find any old Sapphire or reference coolers for the 7970, so naturally I wanted a different cooler. The best (and only one) I can find is the  Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme 7970. I found a NIB one on eBay for $50, $20 less than Amazon.

Should I buy it for my poor old card? Or should I do something else?

Thanks for reading/replying!

EDIT- custom loop is out of the question.

You said about a custom loop being out of the question, but what about getting a GPU waterblock or something and strapping that to the thing? VRM cooling might be a concern...

An Accelero Extreme would be a lot of fun if you could justify buying it.

Sig under construction.

Just a fyi 75 deg under load is great for only one fan xD

Sure, but it's noisy. And it's one can plus my makeshift one. I'll upload a picture later.

You should note that it turns your 2 slot card into a 3 slot + it adds some length to the card (about 3 cm). I used to have a CF of 7970s but when I decided to buy the Xtreme coolers, I could only fit one in my Antec P180.
