Should I upgrade?

Hello! I only have one question, plain and simple.. Should I upgrade my CPU?

 

First off.. I'm a kid. I don't got me much moolah.

 

As of now, I have an AMD FX-8350 OC'd to 4.5Ghz (seen in my sig.)

I know in gaming performance I won't see much of a performance difference (from changing CPU).. Or will I?

 

I play mostly CS:GO, where the performance would be the same. I also play BF4, Rocket League, and a whole bunch of other games.

 

One of them.. is Garry's Mod.

 

Super dramatic?

 

Garry's Mod is a super CPU bound game. Which should be great for me, since I have a nice processor. Right? WRONG! It's on a very early version of the Source Engine, notorious for loving dual-core processors. When I play game modes like DarkRP (Very intense with 50+ people on the server) my performance drops to about 20 or lower FPS. It's horrid, basically unplayable, but it doesn't do it in any other games. To add insult to injury, the CPU is only at about 25% usage (all of two cores) while playing at 20 FPS.

 

Should I upgrade just for one stupid game? It would cost around $350 or so to upgrade to an i5-4690k (I wanna OC) + Z97 mobo (will change if necessary.) I know in other games it won't change much. Also, after upgrading, I could maybe fetch $160 for CPU+Mobo (though I don't have a box for either, it was back when I didn't know much about computers so my dad threw them away. ;-; )

EDIT- Most of Garry's Mod can't use more than one core, since all addons are coded in Lua, a single thread-only platform.

Iirc there's a way to make gmod use all threads possible.. Even virtual cores.

I would say yes. In cs:go an overclocked intel cpu is much better than amd.

An i5 would be extremely nice.

 

I upgraded from an fx 6300 and it made every single game run like a champ. It's always worth switching to Intel IMO

It was on one of the guides, it was a line you'd enter into the advanced startup thingy, it made my CPU have 20% on all cores instead of 100% on one

How did you do it? On (literally) every single page about multi-threading Garry's Mod it says it simply can't be done.

The i5 IS better, but it really wont be worth spending all that cash. an OCed 8350 performs pretty close to an i5. its just not worth buying anymore

You'll get around to using the extra power in one way or another anyway, might as well upgrade.

So how come my FX-8370 + GTX 970 is equally good as my friends i7-4790K + GTX 980?

Gerry's mod doesn't need much cpu power even though it's pretty cpu-bound.This is because the game is old.

The other games you mentionned might see a slight improvement by switching for an i5, but a much more cost-effective upgrade would be to upgrade you gpu , or add another 7970 (you'll see a much bigger difference here).

stated , there might be a mod to make the source engine use more cores , but i haven't heard about it ( google is your friend).
