So I found my some vinyl and heading to the Home Depot this weekend to buy some plasti dip. I saw tutorials about how to paint but they weren't really clear about multiple colors on one surface.

I'm planning to paint my case in white (body) and black or red (strips). How would be the best way to paint it without accidentally peeling the other color off? Body first then strips? Or other way around?

Main thing, would low adhesive masking tape peel the paint even if I wait for it to dry? Comments in the video said yes but that sounds wrong (unless plasti dip is super sensitive)

If you want 3 layers, you paint 3 layers first, wait a bit (couple of minutes) and then peel the tape. It has to be a bit wet still, just don't wait until it's dry to peel it off because that will end bad, it needs to be wet when you peel it.

I would paint the case white completely first (at least 3 layers) and let it totally dry (a couple hours)

Then mask off everything and leave just the strip exposed. Any masking tape should do. Give it a few layers (again, at least 3) and peel the tape off within 5 minutes of the last coat.

When in doubt, re-format.

So as long as I let the white dry completely I shouldn't have issues putting on/off masking tape? And then I just peel off the tape before it drys like normal.

Was told I would need multiple cans of each. For an R4 size case how many cans of white would I need...? I figure 1 can of the black or red is fine since its only a strip but I might need a bit more for the white.

I would get 2 cans of the white to be safe. Especially if your case is currently black, you may want to put like 4 coats to make sure that you get good coverage. you can always return an unused can back to the depot.

1 can of the accent colour will be more than enough and you'll have plenty left over for future projects.

When in doubt, re-format.

Thanks for all the help, in return I will tell you my idea! My current build is named Solus after Mordin Solus from ME (my profile pic). The inside already matches my planned theme but I'm going to attempt to paint the outside to resemble the character's clothing in game. Inside my head it looks amazing but we will have to see :D

That is way to fast to peel off the tape, I would wait like 30 minutes to an hour. Even after 2 hours it is still pliable enough to peel tape off easily.

Here I have a detailed write up on plasti-dip here, I usually don't recommend multiple colors for plasti-dip or complex masking since masking require cutting making it not have very sharp and crisp lines, where a vinyl decal is a better option.

If you want to try though go ahead and give it a try:

The problem is if I end up not liking the result I could just peel off the plasti dip. Can I paint the body in plasti dip but use regular paint on top for accents? Or would that just bleed thru anyway

I haven't tried it myself but others I spoke to in the forums have tried that without problems. Maybe try a test patch on a piece of metal first to see the results.

I disagree with this completely. You don't want the plasti-dip to dry at all before peeling the tape. For other paints I agree that you wait an hour or 2, but plasti-dip is dry after 15 minutes and fully set in an hour.

When in doubt, re-format.

There are basically two options for masking with plasti-dip, apply it super heavy with a single coat for full coverage and peel the tape off immediately or do multiple coats letting it dry in between and making cut lines along the masking to prevent it from peeling up the surrounding plasti-dip.

Both of them work, the first one usually gives crisper lines but it depends on the design and paint job usually.

I think I'm going to attempt the white plasti-dip and then use regular paint for the accents. On the off change it does bleed through the white a bit is it easy to remove the regular paint without ruining the metal finish of the Define R4?

The spray paint on top of the plasti-dip shouldn't bleed through especially since the plasti-dip is a fairly thick coating, only worry is getting nice crisp lines on the plasti-dip surface.

Are plasti-dip painted surfaces somewhat resistant to other paint? If I cover up the white paint on the body and spray with regular black/red paint, wouldn't the lines be clean?

It's more about the surface finish of the plasti-dip you can get a very smooth orange peel type finish to a flocked or sandpaper like finish so that can affect the lines. Plasti-dip itself should have no problem sticking other paint ontop.

Ahhh, I get it (I read your guide and saw the two finishes  ;) ) So I would need to get an knife and pull of some surgeon level precision if I wanted really clean lines either way.

If you have a rough finish you want to make sure the masking tape is suck down well so no paint bleeds under the tape, I don't think you would need to cut it if it's just paint over top of the plasti-dip.
