HDMI to Display port?

Go to solution Solved by Glenwing,

Is there something else that could work in my situation?

You will need a signal converter, but they often have pretty tight limitations on what resolutions work, I doubt you'll find one for HDMI that goes beyond 1080p :/

Hey guys,

The only things I was able to bring with me to uni was my laptop, and monitor, so I tried using my laptop as a desktop (I was used to the larger screen, etc), but there was some pretty bad input lag over hdmi.

I want to try and figure out if its the laptop's hdmi port, or the monitor's hdmi input (I did not have any such issue on my desktop which was connected to the monitor via displayport.

I could just get myself a passive hdmi to dp cable but most of the ones that are sub 20$ only support 1080p, and this is a 1440p monitor.

Is it possible to get hdmi to displayport adapters that support 1440p, for a reasonable price? (I will get my desktop shipped here in a month or 2, so I don't want to spend too much on this "experiment")

I'm not sure about the version of hdmi on the laptop, but it is enough to drive 1440p@60hz.

Is this a monitor or a TV? TV's are known for input lag and the only way to fix it is to put it into game mode on its settings. Likely your laptop and cable are totally fine.

EDIT: Also, AFAIK, a DP-HDMI cable only works with DP as the output (connected to laptop) and HDMI on the display, they do not work in the other orientation.

When in doubt, re-format.

Oh that's going to be an issue... The laptop has a hdmi output, and nothing else (sort of the problem), and the monitor has DP, mini DP, and hdmi.

It is a desktop monitor, and the input lag was not an issue when I was using it with my desktop.

Go into the monitor settings while your laptop is connected and disable everything you can that is along the lines of "dynamic contrast" "dynamic blah blah" "auto motion" (if they exist) and then go into the display mode or scenery mode and set it to "game" or "sRGB" if available.

I have had to do this with every TV I have ever hooked up a computer to, and only once have I had to on a monitor (over HDMI)

When in doubt, re-format.

DisplayPort to HDMI cables only work in one direction, they will not work from HDMI output to a DisplayPort monitor.

Darn... it isn't too much of an issue, as I will get my desktop in not too long, but it would have been nice...

Now I get why linus always goes on about it being bad for a laptop to have hdmi as its only output... not very flexible...
