Hello guys

I'm going to replace my HDD with an SSD to make my laptop a little (a lot actually) faster.

But I've never done customization of a laptop so I need some help :)

Q1: I'm looking at a Samsung 850 EVO 500gb, will this fit in the drive in my laptop?

Q2: I'm not concerned about losing files so I can do a clean install of the OS, but I didn't get a disk with my laptop so how do I do the clean install?

Q3: Is it easy to replace the RAM? I'm looking at putting in 16Gb of Crucial 1600mhz ram

-edit-

I can either get Crucial for 104 bucks or corsair vengeance for 112.. Which one should I get?

I think that was it :D

Thanks in advance!

Depends what generation of Macbook you have.  New Retina Macbooks use a custom mini-SATA or mini-PCIe connector. Same goes for RAM, many Macbooks come with soldered RAM, it will be the older generation (pre-2012 I believe) that may be easy to upgrade.

So which exact generation of Macbook do you have?

If this is the exact model you have, look at this guide on iFixit.  According to iFixit you can upgrade both storage and memory.  Storage has to be a 2.5" SATA drive.

Ahh, I forgot to mention, do a bit of research about compatible RAM.  I have a friend who upgraded his last generation 17" Macbook Pro's memory, he couldn't install just any brand.

It's exceedingly simple to upgrade the RAM and storage drive on your computer. I've done it many times. Once you get the bottom case removed it's all pretty obvious. And if it still has a warranty, it's not voided, but it won't cover the upgrades. So keep the original parts until the Apple warranty expires.

Hey there yannickverc,

I can suggest to check out WD Black2 dual drive. It combines a 120GB SSD with a 1TB HDD in the same form factor. It gives you the fast access times, responsiveness and quick transfer speeds of the SSD and a massive 1TB secondary storage. Unlike SSHDs, both parts here work independently and you are free to choose what goes where. Here's a link: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=TV32PL

The SSD that you are looking at should also work just fine.
Do check posts from people wwho have done such upgrades to see details on how the procedure goes.

You can try looking at the bigger retailers (online and on-the-spot stores). You can also check our online store for more info: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=UGp18m :)
