Hey guys, just wanted to get some opinions.

I have to write a 6 to 8 page essay investigating a certain area of math e.g. calculus, functions, trigonometry and its uses in practical applications eg coming up with a function to calculate the location of a certain planet at any given time.

I was wondering if there are any computer hardware related topics that I could explore since that is what I am interested in. I was thinking of doing something about fan speeds/fan noise since that seems to be fairly mathematical in nature. Any suggestions? :)

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

You could talk about how the processor executes numbers to give commands.

Life is pain. Anyone who says any different is either selling something or the government.

That is quite an interesting topic but I don't think I will be able to produce any conclusions on it. The main purpose of the essay is to come up with a final formula/function/equation that can be used to address the topic of the essay :P Thus the reason why I was thinking about doing something fan related.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

That's a really good idea. I should start doing my essays about pc's and technology

How about this? You can probably make a function out of that chart. This was from my old lecture notes.

4. Instruction Level Parallelism. As was previously discussed, one of the most important performance refinements in addition to clock speed is the concept of executing more tasks at once. For example, the next instruction may be fetched while the first instruction is decoded. Parallelism comes in two basic forms:

a) Instruction-level parallelism: parallelism is exploited within individual instructions

B) Processor-level parallelism: multiple processors are employed to work on the same problem, as in the fairly radical new PS3 that distributes graphical processing tasks between multiple CPUs.

5. Pipelining: Instead of dividing instruction execution into only two parts, it is divided into several (often more than 12). Each is handled by a piece of dedicated hardware, all of which run in parallel. The individual hardware units constitute the "stages" of the pipeline.

Example:

S1: Instruction fetch unit à S2: Instruction decode unit à S3: Operand fetch unit à S4: Instruction execution unit à S5: Write back unit

Example continued: (5-stage pipeline operation over 9 clock cycles)

I wish I could. I just did a 6 page on WWZ it was good but not as good as tech.

If you do the fan topic you will

Be stuck in some fun physics calculation, not computer related but I would suggest analysing various types of suspension design in mountain bikes such as single pivot, split pivot, concentric pivots and the DW link. This and their relation to air and metal spring curves could be interesting
