well for rendering it depends if the program supports cuda aswell as opengl(i think thats what amd uses) if it does then amd's will be better(due to having more gpu cores and for gaming at 1080p there is very little difference but at a higher resolution then the 390 will pull a head

Both Adobe Premiere and Sony Vegas support CUDA and OpenCL, but Premiere has a bit better CUDA support while Vegas has FAAAAAAAR better OpenCL support.

Personally, I'd do the 390. It's better than the 970 in pretty much every single category, and, as you said, you also use Vegas so the 390 has an upper hand in there.

For CUDA, 970

For games, 390 

Choose your priority. The 970 is pretty good in games but the 390 is better in gaming.

dont get Gigabyte 390... get MSI/XFX/Sapphire/Powercolor/Club3D instead..

 

there has been quite a few reports of BIOS issues or faulty components with the Gigabyte 390's....
