I don't know the UK prices, but if u can squeeze it in get the Edge Ruter lite + one of those AP's from the other thread ;)

If u can't get an ERL, try something like this: http://routerboard.com/RB750UPr2

Network/Homelab build log Main PC: "Aqua Blue"  Server: 15TB+ "Blue Lightning"

3900x, 32GB RAM @3200mhz, RTX 3090, 2.5TB+ SSD Storage, 4x2560x1440 monitors

I am with Virgin Media, the router they provide is utterly shit, its not even dual band

My house is small, and the walls are just thin plaster, so honestly just replacing my shit virgin router with a single all round good router I can get from amazon or whatever is really all I need, all crucial stuff like my desktop is hard wired

You should be able to get a free upgrade to the Super Hub 2 which is dual band with AC.  They may charge £50 depending on how long you've been with them.

I didn't say anything about BT and Sky, but VM's latest router is great.

I've heard good things about this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-RT-AC68U-Dual-Band-Wireless-AC-SharePort/dp/B00G323PG0/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1443791945&sr=8-4&keywords=asus+router thought of picking it up myself.

Have a look at Asus AC routers. They get praised a lot, but I can't personally recommend due to the fact that I haven't owned one myself. :)

Good choice, yes it'll be their AC Super Hub 2.

The standard Super Hubs have been discontinued for over a year now, you'll almost definitely get the new version.

Can someone please explain why people still buy the consumer grade stuff?  :(

Marketing.

Yeah, but even after getting better stuff presented for about the same price they still go and buy the overpriced shit, then complain they have to restart it every week xD

I have never had to reset my shitty free router that I got from virgin, its just not dualband and doenst have great range

Consumer stuff is easier to deal with, some business products do not have customer support, or easily downloadable firmware etc, and since less people use it, its harder to get answers etc

plus I can just deal with amazon and send it back if its broken etc, which is SUPER easy

Amazon do selll business grade products:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=mikrotik

http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=ubiquiti&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Aubiquiti

I wasn't talking to you specific, but this is something that is repeating itself for me "what should i buy at a XX budget?" "xx product is great for the price" "Ok, i just bought xx product" "Hi xx is wrong with xx do u have any idea how to fix it?"

I'm however not only talking about networking, but like 99% of the customer stuff is crap, and I know because I've had to try to fix or at least better a lot of it (Custom firmware for example makes it a bit better)

I know they do, but I have no familiarity with any of the brands, and I am not sure what equipment I need to set up, i dont know if an access point is what I want, I really want to replace the whole router etc

as far as things like custom firmware goes, yeah I would never dream of that, I just want something that I connect and that works, with like no setting up,

Heck why do you think I use iOS :P

This is a good router for the price, amazon currently does not have the new UniFi products, but when they get them you might be able to get one of those + that router.

Ubiquiti has quite an easy interface and is really easy to setup, but for example mikrotik is quite a bit more "enthusiast" or "business" ;)

Thats just wired router, which I dont want, I want a wireless router, I already have my stuff hard wired that isnt on wifi with various gigabit switches etc and I can always add an access point there later

one review says "You will need a good understanding of networking, firmware updates, and command line configuration", which I dont.. so I would rather just get an Asus/Netgear/TP link box that I can just plug in etc
