Hi guys so i want to upgrade my brothers PC abit for him for christmas

Specs atm

E2160 Pentium @1.8ghz , OC'd to 2.8

2gb DDR2 Ram @800mhz

Msi GTX 580 , my mum found it in a skip , fans didnt work so i strapped a spare coolermaster fan to it

EVGA 750B2 PSU , present from my dad

500gb seagate Harddrive out of a TV box

i want to do a cheap-ish upgrade that will allow the gpu to really be utilized

Will a G3258 (moderately OC'd to about 4ghz ) keep up with the gtx 580 ? obviously with a mobo change and DDR3 ram

if you have any other budget mindd suggestions please tell me about them :P

thanks in advance :)

My Pc Specs

The G3258 is really good and everyone loves it bc it overclocks like a champ, but it depends on what you want to use it for. Even still, most games are starting to need more than 2 cores or else they don't typically run.

EDIT: It still has two cores and it's not hyperthreaded. Don't let the hype train blind you.

If this is on the budget it should be fine. But keep in mind that if you want to change the CPU, The motherboard, RAM, and cooler (If you want to do some hardcore OC, unless you can try your luck with the stock one) will have to be changed, so this wouldnt really be "cheap".

this is only to get some more performance out of that gtx580 , the old lga775 pentium is really holding it back , this is only until he starts to get some money :)

yeah g3258 is fine. make sure u oc it, and also give ur brother at least 8gb of ram, u gonna need ddr3 if u upgrade the cpu. 8gb is like $60, pretty cheap

yeah i know , 8gb's here is about £35 , so thats an easy buy

i have an old Coolermaster hyper 212 lying about i can use from when i upgraded my cooler , so thats not an issue , ive seen plenty of people get 4ghz on the stock cooler

ummmm you would have too get a new mobo and ram..... Isnt his current cpu on 775? The g3258 is on 1150.

didnt u guys read what he said, he knows that he have to change mobo and ram. read before u make any comments people

Athlon X4 860k > Pentium. You might get slightly higher FPS with the Pentium right now, however the 860k will be relevant for a longer period of time. It's simply more powerful in multithreaded tasks and it also overclocks just as well.

I got 4.4 GHz on my G3258 on the stock cooler. It seems like I have heard 4.2 GHz is usually achievable on the stock cooler.

try getting an athlon x4 860k

but yeah it'll do just fine with a 580

I agree with what these guys have said. While the G3258 is a huge upgrade over what he already has, the Athlon with its four threads will be able to run more games smoothly. Some modern games are unplayable with only two threads as they'll have insane stuttering, freezes and fps drops. So an 860K would be a better option IMO. The only exception is if you know for sure that the games your brother plays are lightweight and will run fine on Pentium, or if he will be able to upgrade to an i5/i7 within a reasonable timeframe.

An i3 would also serve him very well but it's obviously pricier than a Pentium or Athlon.

The G3258 is a massive upgrade (that current Pentium was shit when it launched-I'd rather a single core Pentium M over it), however dual cores no longer cut it with modern games and programs. As other people are saying an i3 is the best option for your brother at the moment, with the cheapest motherboard that is compatible (I suggest however that you run your choices by us first so that we can help you get the best value for money).

Imo go for i3. I had g3258 overclocked to 4.4 Ghz but whenever some game requieres or utilizes 4 cores, stuttering was really huge and for example, to achieve 60 fps on witcher 2, I had to set the lowest settings on 1080p. And I have gtx770. So really huge bottleneck.
