Ok so a while ago I built a nas with a raspberry Pi 2 and a 4 tb wd red HDD. I like to leave it plugged in so it accessible all the time like a nas should be. However lately my family has been complaining that they aren't getting as good of a wifi range and not as fast up/down speeds. When I unplugged the nas, problem solved. Except I want the nas running 24/7 so I want to know what's going on and how do I fix it. Oh and one more thing my mom is computer illiterate so she has a mac... and because my brother frequently drops it shattering the HDD (twice since we got it) my mom bought a time machine to back it up. She needs a Time machine and it has to be a Time machine because she wont listen to reason. Thanks for the help!

your solution is to hardwire it...use powerline adapters if you have to...tho really usually its not that hard to wire a house for ethernet to a few rooms

She won't go for that. Having a wireless laptop is more important to her than a nas...

then you sound like you need a new router
