i5-4460 advice

First post on LTT, so please be gentle (I use r/buildapc). I have never built a computer before, and I'm planning a pc build right now. I was wondering whether an i5-4460 processor would hold up to an R9 390, and 8gb of DDR3 RAM. Would I be able to run games like Planetside 2 at ultra/60fps? I'm looking for great gaming performance, and the ability to record and edit footage from games.

yes that is an amazing set up and would be great for almost any game at 1080p and 1440p

<p>Wish I could have this already!! : http://pcpartpicker.com/p/qTLRjX

Definitely, might want to step up to the 4590 though, since it has a higher clock for like $10 more.

Main PC: i5 4590 @ 3.5 GHz ♦ RX 480 Armor OC ♦ 16 GB DDR3 ♦ GA-Z97-HD3 ♦ 120 GB 840 EVO ♦ 120 GB Intel 520 ♦ W10 Home

100-200MHz aren't worth - no difference - mine was on sale for cheaper xD

Forgot to say I'll be doing 1080p gaming.

Yes it would be great, however for record and editing footage i would recommend a i7 4790k, but thats if your doing a good amount of it.  The i5 non-k will be fine though.

i7s are overhyped - a Xeon is better than an i7 for work

Great. I was pretty sure it would work, but an employee at memory express told be I wouldn't be able to do gaming with any less than an i7. I guess he assumed I was clueless, and tried to make me buy more.

4690K will be about 70$ cheaper (even more if you re-use RAM) and will be only 9% slower

Employees at stores are idiots with a big mouth - avoid them.

I was also wondering if someone could recommend a motherboard that can handle these parts for <$77USD/$100CAD. By the way thank you all so much for the advice! This forum is way friendlier than r/buildapc, plus you all responded crazy fast.

Yeah, I would say it is worth it. It's literally $10 more.

Completely, but my memory express has a great track record, and helped me figure out my first upgrade ever, so I thought I might ask them. I'll definitely come here for future advice, especially since you don't seem to have a bunch of rules about what kind of questions I can ask.

Slightly over-budget, but these two are good:

(I assume you're from Canada, seeing as you put 100 CAD as your budget :))

Yeah, I am. I only realized like 3 days ago that I was WAY over budget since the Canadian dollar is worth so much less than USD. Thanks for the suggestions. I have a quick question about MOBOs. The only important things about a motherboard are the compatibilities, since its the thing that connects everything else, right? I won't lose any performance by using a cheaper MOBO?

nope - as long as you have a PCIe 3.0 x16 slot for the GPU and the right socket for the CPU it's fine :)

And those MOBOs have those, right? I really know nothing about compatibilty.

Nope - as long as you have all the necessary connections a board will not affect performance in any measureable way AFAIK.

Look up the specs :)

If it lists the expansion slots as having a PCIe 3.0 X16 slot then it's fine. - also check the RAM speeds for your memory and the voltages.
