AMD Hardware Suggestions?

Go to solution Solved by samuel,

Cheapo AM3+ motherboard (GA 990A-UD3), 6 core FX6300, nice budget video card (HD 7750 or 7730), 4-8GB 1333 mhz memory (even the cheapest ones are good for your tight budget),  350-400W Trusted brand PSU (avoid Corsair CX, I had some problems), and dust off your old case and reuse it to save money for an SSD or more HDD storage. A good 350W PSU will even give you 4.0-4.2 GHZ OC. This will be a very fast general use machine and light gaming. A 60GB SATA3 SSD and a large HDD is what you want actually.

HI, i am looking to upgraded my old Pentium 4 Ubuntu server to something a little more serious. i am a COMPLETE Intel fan boy! and i have no clue when it comes to amd. But from what I've heard amd is a cheaper easier solution. i would like hardware suggestions (IE: Motherboard, Socket, Processor, etc...)  I am looking to build a CHEAP BASIC Ubuntu server. Nothing gaming grade just simple and cheap but relatively decent. I will be running an ftp server a minecraft server and maybe a few other occasional light weight game servers. I was also thinking like a quad core maybe? nothing really more and was wondering if it paid to get an APU, or not. it will have Ubuntu Desktop on it but will be acting like a server, also i was thinking like 8/gb of RAM. if that matters. IM OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS!! Tanks in advance.

Also was thinking about doubling it as a home theater PC,as well as the server functionality...

Thanks for the ideas, also I was looking for AMD hardware to kinda get into figuring out both sides. And sorry if i was misleading with the server bit. it will be just like any other low-grade PC, nothing special. just running Ubuntu and i would be using Ubuntu as a server and HTPC.

--also looking for socket as well (i have no idea what is new or 4 years old.....)--

I was also thinking just a normal CPU I just remembered I have a spare GT-430 lying around new in the box. might as well put it to use.

-- I am still open to other suggestions!

Thank you so far!
