Huge TDP

Go to solution Solved by Glenwing,

So I found an AMD FX-9590, it is cheaper than a 4790k, it has more cores, and a higher clock speed. But it has a 220W TDP.

I have two questions:

First, is there any big disadvantage that it has other than the higher power consumption/TDP?

Second, can a Phanteks PH-TC14PE support this kind of TDP, or will I need a higher-end air cooler? This is for my first build, so I'm a bit shaky about going with water cooling right now.

The i7-4790K is a stronger CPU. The FX-9590 is an FX-8350 with the default settings changed, nothing else.

Isn't the 9590 just a binned 8350?

9590 is slower than an i5. So that's the disadvantage.

First off, I would advise against getting a 9590. It runs hot, consumes a lot of power, and in applications that don't utilize all eight threads(like games), it will perform worse than the 4790K. In addition, you NEED to make sure you have a beefy VRM on your board.

It doesn't perform as well overall and gets killed on single core ratings

I think the 9590 is just a factory OC'd 8350[.]

That's because it is. Architecture is 100% the same.

As mentioned above, please don't go with a 9590 cpu. If you are set on going for AMD cpu (I wouldn't) then the FX-8320/50 is a better buy as you can just overclock it yourself.

What is the pc going to be used for ?
