HX850 making cicada sound

Rusty_Shackleford

When I'm playing a game the PSU will start to sound like a cicada weird I know. Should I be worried? Also when the fan spins it sounds like it's grinding, it's hard to explain.

Ran hitting something? You could take it apart and see if unplugging the fan fixes it then replace the fan if needed

Ran? Ram? Like this one

I admit - that hitting the PSU would be an explanation but yeah :D

Very helpful.

I think I know about what kind of sound you're talking about.

The HX850 is one of those "the fan will only spin under load" PSUs, right? If so it is probably the fan that is making that noise.

I use the AX760i which has a similar problem. Everytime it gets under load the fan will spin up and when it starts it makes that weird grinding sound. Dpending on the load and fan speed it can get louder or quieter.

So, I would recommend to either contact Corsair with the problem and see what they say, maybe they can even send you a new unit or you do what "CatzRuleZWorld" said and open the PSU up and replace the fan.

Is it more like a chirping sound? Like when a capacitor is failing, it creates build up of hydrogen gases until it pop. If the gas is seeping out of the cap, it may make this distinctive chirping sound. It may eventually stop and start again, when the gases build up again.

If that's the case, you would likely want to RMA the power supply. Maybe Corsair Joseph can help you with that.

2BB fans often make noises at low RPM from the metal bearings rolling inside of the fan hub.

It's not as high pitch as a chirp, it's lower like a cicada.
