Ok so i know im about to get alot of hate but idc.... im doing an a large x99 build and on the MB im getting it has an m.2 slot as well as an adapter for m.2 to be mounted in a pci slot. First off, cause you raid 0 onboard m.2 ssd with a pci m.2 ssd?

And my main question, if i only run a single m.2 ssd, what would be faster? A single m.2 ssd or 4xSSD in raid 0?

Before you tell me that raid 0 is stupid cause of risk of drive failure, i. Not worried about it so dont bug me about it lol

Depends what SSD you're using, or what M.2 you're using.

No information has been supplied.

If you're thinking of purchasing the new Samsung 950 M.2 than, it would be still slower in write, but faster in read performance, with 4 raid 0 SSDs. - But this is just stupid.

If your SSD is around 500 mb/s read and 500 mb/s write, you're seeing about a 3 1/2x performance of one SSD.

why do you need 4 disks in raid 0

it doesnt even matter for programs...

if you want to waste money on faster speed just buy a intel 750 series NVMe SSD

I just purchased the Intel 750, but it seems Samsung just announced the 950 Pro, which is as fast as the 750, but cheaper.'

Which is annoying, oh well!

Im looking at the 850 evos for both the m.2 and 2.5" ssds and 4-500gb ssds will be cheaper then a 1.2tb nvme drive for a pci slot. And give me more room. And i dont like having multiple drives in my OS. So baiscly im only going to use ssds in raid 0. I have a nas that does nightly back ups so im not worried about drive failure

its not really better...

writes are 300MBps higher but reads are 350MBps lower

Hey there Andrew Storlie,

M.2 is just the slot for the drive. What matters is which controller does it use - PCIe or the SATA one.
I would check the specific drive's spec sheet and see what transfer speeds are listed there. Then you can see the speeds of regular 2.5" SATA SSDs, multiply them by 4 and take away around 15% of the result and get the RAID0 speed results. Then you can compare the two speeds and you'll get your answer. Do have in mind that RAID0 have little effect on random read/write speeds.
I would say a single PCIe SSD would be the better option in terms of performance and end results plus it has a far less chance of failure and data loss. :)
