Should I...

Fuzz_Ball

I am wonderin if I should changed my AMD 7950 (3GB version Gigabyte brand) to a GTX970. some of the 970's are on sale. Or should I wait? Only differences I can see between the two (7950 and gtx970) 970 is better then the 7950, execpt for the Memory Bandwidth. Which 7950 is little bit better at. That is what I got from HWcompare.

Memory Bandwidth

My 7950 works and all, just wonderin if I should go for a change. I was debating a new GPU or a second screen. If I go for the new GPU route. my choices are:

First of all make sure you actually want this upgrade for legitimate reasons and not just "it's getting to be a bit old now." Second look up benchmarks in the games you want to play and see if there's substantial improvement in those games.

Just a thought since the past few AMd drivers updates, broke more things then anything. Some of the games I played on, there is a weird alpha bug or rendering issue that causes things to be transparent. only fix was to roll back the driver. Looked around and saw barely any performance from them. Meh, mainly thinkin.. Might end up savin for a 980ti or somethin

If you absolutely need the better performance right now, go for it. Otherwise if your 7950 still packs a punch for your current usage, I'd say wait on the newer cards with HBM2 and full dx12 support.

if you can wait for a year or two you can save up for the dx12 generation. i personally wouldnt buy this generation but i got a higher end card. also nvidia wants to use hbm 2 which looks pretty damn sweet.

if you dont want to wait the 390 will perform probably a tiny bit better and there is still a little hope for dx12

I might as well wait on it then. Seeing cards that give me a slight boost, for the same price as I spent on the two year old card. I do like the idea of the HBM

The 7950 is DX12 ready, so my personal choice would be to get another and crossfire them. That should be quite a powerful combination.

Mm.. didn't knew that and hard part is, finding another 7950.. but the bad part is, 7950 doesn't fully support freesync, then again. screen tearing doesn't really bother me.

The 7950 is a GCN card which has support for DX12. I think it is 7700 and above but double check to be sure.

There is a certain online auction site that tends to see a lot of them. Buy from a reputable seller though. My first (reputable seller) was, and still is, excellent. My 2nd failed within 20 mins and not long after so did the psu that I got from the same person. (Not reputable seller)

Check that your psu will power them ok and you should be golden.

They don't have to be exactly the same with AMD, different manufacturers should be fine.

Well, that is the only one I ran into, in a short amount of time, on amazon.
