Hello everyone, I have been planning a total PC build for the past 4 months now and it has finally come time to start ordering components. I have all of my parts already chosen, but I am stuck on the subject of a graphics card. This GPU will be paired with an Intel i7-6700k, and will be living it's life displaying at 1440p 60hz. Now I have been looking at some comparisons and I have hit a wall. The 390x is an amazing card, and the 980ti is also likewise, however; which would be better in the long run. I do know that vram can be an issue when playing at resolutions higher than 1080p, so would the 390x be a better candidate over the 980ti? I don't really favor a side, but with the power consumption and heat output of the 390x, it kinda pushes me away. On the other hand the price of the 980ti I am planning to get hurts. Thanks Guys!

The 980 ti is a whole other tier of gpu(and more expensive of course) so youd have to ask yourself if the performance is worth the price.

I dont see 6gb of vram being an issue in 1440p (or 4gb for that matter) in the foreseeable future, so id say thats a minor point at best.

btw, the r9 390 has quite a bit better price/performance compared to the 390x.

980 Ti is worlds better. A better comparison would be 980 Ti vs Fury X (980 Ti would win)

Just remember: Random people on the internet ALWAYS know more than professionals, when someone's lying, AND can predict the future.

980Ti is the best overall GPU out there if you have the money for it. It performs better than the Titan X (when OC'd), Fury X, and everything else beneath it.

I run 3440x1440 on 4GB of VRAM without any issues. So no, the VRAM won't be a problem.

Apart from that the 980Ti is almost as powerful as two R9 390X.

This. The 390X has the performance of a cherry picked, overbuilt 290X, something like the 290X lightning is a good performance and build comparison.

In the next 6-12 months as DX12 pushes onto the scene, you will see the 390x catch-up/surpass the 980ti in benchmarks, simply because the Hawaii gpu is technically superior and more "futureproof" compared to Maxwell 2.0. Maxwell 2.0 was built to chew through DX11, but will be replaced very quickly by Pascal.

at 1440p and 60hz, you are better off with the 390/x, regardless of the API.

Where did you obtain your information i must know because i wana buy a Gtx 980 i currently have R9 390 but the heat output is to crazy with this card it literally heats up the outside metal

Hm... I thought the gtx900 series was made to be DX12 ready, also amd seems to be losing on the DX support front due to resource of the company.... Also reading into Pascal, its not going to be a huge jump in terms of graphics they just made the com speed faster... even thou we havent saturated our current PCIE lanes yet ... also Pascal might use a complete different connection so u will need to buy new mobo and stuff? Not 100% sure on this

Also ... 6 - 12 months in the current world could mean a complete refresh... if u want to wait u can always wait forever
