Windows 10 search just wont work

garthvater111

Simply put, i have the search icon on my task bar which i used to use to do all the search type things. I dont know what i did but when i click it nothing happens at all. In the home button menu i cant search either, i just cant search! This is a huge problem because i cant open many of the apps such as calculator by hitting the search button or hitting the windows key and typing. Also opening something like power shell without the search sucks.

This is what i mean (when i clicked the home button i did try to type btw). It is worth mentioning cortana has been removed entirely and web search ect has been disabled so i only search stuff on my pc. It worked for a while after i removed cortana and all the other bs preloaded apps but it has stopped working and i have waited over a week but it wont fix itself on restarts and i cant find any info on how to fix it.

I will really appreciate any insight or solutions to fixing my problem

Mine did the same thing. I think I am on what, the fourth installation of windows 10? And now it works?

yeah i mean what can i say its new and not really gone anywhere yet. idk why everyone is so eager to cause themselves problems with this OS. Just wait 6-8 months until it isn't crap.

Or fricken dual boot 7 or 8.1 with 10, it isn't realiable enough to be used yet for real.

  1. Open Windows PowerShell as Administrator
    1. Right click Start button
    2. Choose Command prompt (Admin)
    3. Key in Powershell in the black window and hit Enter
  2. Paste the following command in the Administrator: Windows PowerShell window and press Enter key:Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
  3. Wait for PowerShell to execute and complete the command. Ignore the few errors (in red color) that may pop up.
  4. When it finishes, try hitting Start and hopefully it’ll start working. If not, this solution won’t apply to you, unfortunately.

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

I had to reinstall to fix most of the problems I had. Including the horrible memory leak

With just the stuff i've seen here, i know i'll be getting the most out of my 7 and dual booting 10 so i can get it for free, but its not really ready to be used.

You have a few options, but first, I would try the following, it worked for me when I had a similar issue

Open task manager, go to the User tab, find Search, End task. Then retry to search, it should relaunch itself and now work.

If it didn't work, this time open Command Prompt as Admin (right click on the start menu) and then type " sfc /scannow ". Let it do it's thing, it should find and repair any system files that are broken.

If it still doesn't work, try rebuilding the search index (if you disabled indexation on your HDD/SSD, for lord knows why as it barely uses any writes at all, re-enable it)

If all else failed, just format.
