Look at edit.

Only the 6950 has reference cooler.

2 things. One, if it has the reference cooler of course it is going to be hotter, current Nvidia coolers get to 83C at load, not far off. And that is THIS GENERATION. Also, I don't trust the 80C idle. Either you live in death valley, or that is wrong. No card only gets 10C hotter under load, other than some massive loop.

Doesn't look okay to me. My 7970 doesn't even go above 68*C.

I'm surprised at the number of misinformed peeps there are here 0_0

It's not necessarily bullshit. Every AMD card I have runs hotter than my Nvidia cards (Fermi cards included, looking at you @Bogica)

6950 runs 90° under load, 80° idle

550Ti runs 70° under load, 55° idle

Same with my R9 290x Lightning and 650Ti Boost SC, though to a lesser extent. The variance is closer to 10°, not 20°.

EDIT: Added the word "necessarily," because I forgot, there are exceptions. In my limited experience though, AMD runs hotter (and I know, I'm comparing different tier cards, but still)

You wot m8? Did you just compare high end with low-mid end?

A 650Ti Boost SC is roughly the same range as my R9 270, and my R9 270 on the hottest summer day it hit 63c, normally it's 55-58c while gaming.

Actually, the R9 270 is better, it's more like an R7 260, which runs even cooler.

That's like comparing the fuel consumption of a Prius and a Veyron. High end cards perform and consume like a Veyron, while your 550 & 650 are more like a Prius...

When I put that card back in a system, I'll do my best to remember to pm you MSI Afterburner load and idle temps (no I won't, cause I don't have to prove anything to you). It does idle between 75-80°. Under load, it gets to 90-94°. Usually, it is closer to 80° and 90° respectively. That's the reason I got the Lightning, to lower the heat output. Those temps were also measured during the summer in Michigan, average of 75-80°F ambient. I was warned when I bought the card from a friend that it is a space heater, and had been since purchase. Only got hotter with time, and it looks to have some dust buildup, which would cause it to head up more. CBA to clean it out, honestly. Going to toss a block on it and add it to a loop when I get my 4970k and the AMD rig becomes a spare.

Btw, if you still want to watercool that xfx, get the alphacool fullcover block. I modded mine just a little bit to make it fit the nonreference design. Highly recommended if you can find one cheap and don't plan on buying reference 7950's in the future. (And why would you, they're starting to get old)

IM going to sell the XFX and buy one with a waterblock for 120$, it will end up cheaper/IK it will fit

I did, and I did acknowledge that in the edit line. Please read fully and carefully next time. Unlike some people, I haven't been blessed with massive loads of cash to buy top tier cards first-hand. So, with what I have to compare, I compared. I know there will be a variance, I know there will be a decent variance. That's my "test set" though, all but the 290x perform similarly, so with the exclusion of that, I see no issue. *shrug* whatever though, people will always find something to argue about on the Internet I guess. I reach 70ish degrees when under 100% load with no custom curve, no joke.

I see. Can't really explain this, the cooling in my case isn't great so that might be it. What 390 do you have?

EDIT: I can see it's the G1 Gaming. Might be a better cooler than the MSI Gaming one, idk really.

Well neither have I, I have more than enough, but everything Pc and phone related comes out of my pocket, so I do some heavy research before buying anything, especially since I burned myself with the Nvidia Fermi series which cost a shit ton of money, overheated my entire case and in order to keep cool made the fan sound like a jet was taking off in my room. I would never again buy a card with poor cooling, even if that means buying a mid range card just to keep the case cool and the fan noise normal. :) AMD cards (apart from highest end) DO NOT run hot. :)

I think MSI has the 2nd best 390 cooler though.

What are your clocks?

MSI's OCMode preset. Maybe I just got a hot-running card?

I OC'd to 1045/1700, something might be wrong with your card.

Not sure about that, it only ever just nudges 80 when stress-testing for long periods. Because of the mediocre ventilation of my case, I think this is normal. I might make a custom fan profile though...

Probably just this sick cooler, the heatsink is a reference style so it goes out of the case, pretty decent.

Is it safe to run my HD 7950 at 84-86 degrees gaming?

Mine was rubbing nubs with 95C for the longest time and it's fine. Now with my fantastic TwinFrozr III cooler I have yet to even hit 75C (which would be 10C cooler than compared to after my repaste), and idles with two monitors is about 50C (10 whole degrees cooler). Not to mention my rig is super quiet until the fans hit about 2400RPM and then I can hear them.

I don't blame mine entirely on xfx, as I don't have good air flow. But it could be in part.

No, it's all the cooler. I had good airflow and after a repaste I was getting the low to mid 80s.

Yeah, but its also my bad air flow.

My old GPU was 10 degrees warmer than in my old case
