Need advice on CPUs

Hey all.

 

First time poster. Long time watcher/reader. Was hoping to get some advice. I havent built a pc in a few years and many generations of CPU have passed by. The rig I am using at the moment was a ready built machine I got cheap. It has an i7 3930k processor in it but the motherboard is starting to play up. I am considering building a new machine but dont have the same budget I had back when I got this one. My question is. Do I buy an older motherboard that still supports the 3930k but doesnt have support for ddr4, or other newer tech, etc. Or am I better off getting a newer processor with a newer motherboard and if so what processors can I get that have the same or better performance than the 3930k. I dont want to sacrafice performence for a newer motherboard.

funny. I just rebuilt my 3930k machine with a new mobo. old one worked fine, was just too big. I went to mATX.

As for performance, my 3930k beats a skylake 6700k on multithreaded workloads.

That's still a really kickass processor, I would go and find a new motherboard for it.

it's too bad you can't use that cpu with the newer x99 motherboards. you can try and find a motherboard that's been used, but still in good condition and go from there OR you could sell your cpu and motherboard and save up for a new cpu and mobo

New mobo and 16GBs of RAM and you are quite "future-proof" even if there is no such thing also the DX12 API will let you use all 6 treads!

There are some upgrades available (such as the 5820K + X99 board + DDR4 memory), but they're going to be expensive and sometimes rather marginal. I think it's worth trying to keep an i7-3930K if you can find a motherboard that's priced within reason.

It's hard to say, because the platform is out of production and any you find on sale are probably going to be either used or very overpriced. A new motherboard, CPU, and memory that would be worthwhile as an upgrade will probably start at around $500-600, though.

Newegg still has brand new motherboards for your 3930k. Picked up an ROG board for a little over 200 bucks.

Expensive, but cheaper than buying a new CPU and RAM too. Especially considering the 3930k is still a monster CPU.

Thanks for all the advice. I follow what the majority said and find a resonably priced x79.
