PSU choice for under 75$

Go to solution Solved by quan289,

I think I'll just take that EVGA SuperNOva S2 550W psu and overrun my budget a little bit. But I think it'll be worth it due to 10 years of warrenty and dat score from jonnyguru!

Or is there anything that I am missing out on those, that you told me?

The SF Leadex G2 seem to cost about €10 more than the SS build (new design) GS I had suggested: http://geizhals.eu/evga-supernova-g2-550-550w-atx-2-3-220-g2-0550-y3-a1297440.html

While both of them are good, the G2 is more targeted in the higher-end segment than the GS, in which you get a longer warranty (10 vs 5 years) and better electrical performance (in respect to voltage regulation, ripple suppression, transient loads). It's also more quiet at higher loads.

Either of them would be good, but I feel that the G2 is worth it for €10 more.

So I am building a new system for my sister with an intel i7 2600 @3,40Ghz and a stock GTX970.

As the psu from the last system is pretty crappy she'll need a new one!

Requirements:

- Around 400W-500W

- semi-modular or modular

(- ~150mm long as it will probably go into Xigmatek Aquila but not yet fixed)

- good voltages with low ripple

- ~75€

Please post me your suggestions!

I knew people were going to say that...  :P Honestly don't get it unless your system requires under 500w. I have a cx430 because my system only uses around 250w under load.

EVGA GS 550W.

How about the EVGA G2 550W?

It's very similar prices to the GS and gets better scoring from jonnyguru..

Why would you recommend a fire hazard when you can get a high quality SeaSonic or Delta unit for lower than that?

Yep, it's very good. However, the G2 is 165mm and the GS is 150mm. Both are excellent quality.

Antec VPF550 (a solid indy regulated PSU from Delta. Lacks modularity. This unit is not to be confused with the VP550F...They are indeed different units ) : http://geizhals.eu/antec-vpf550-0-761345-06460-6-a1210678.html?hloc=at&hloc=de&hloc=pl&hloc=uk&hloc=eu

Cooler Master G450M (CWT GPK with an updated DC-DC secondary. It's also quiet lower loads and offer semi-modularity ) : http://geizhals.eu/cooler-master-g450m-450w-atx-2-31-rs-450-amaab1-a1010337.html?hloc=at&hloc=de&hloc=pl&hloc=uk&hloc=eu

Fractal Design Integra M 450w (an ATNG build, indy regulated PSU that is semi-modular ) : http://geizhals.eu/fractal-design-integra-m-450w-atx-2-4-fd-psu-in3b-450w-a1147734.html?hloc=at&hloc=de&hloc=pl&hloc=uk&hloc=eu

Super Flower Golden Green HX 450w (it's a solid gold unit, but the HX variant is cost down in which it offer lower quality CapXon capacitor and a sleeved bearing fan) : http://geizhals.eu/super-flower-golden-green-hx-450w-atx-2-3-sf-450p14xe-hx-a1039307.html?hloc=at&hloc=de&hloc=pl&hloc=uk&hloc=eu

Seasonic G 450w (DC-DC regulated, Gold unit, semi-modularity, Japanese caps and 2BB fan) : http://geizhals.eu/sea-sonic-g-series-g-450-450w-atx-2-3-ssr-450rm-a830685.html?hloc=at&hloc=de&hloc=pl&hloc=uk&hloc=eu

Those will be good for your system. Take you pick. Most will recommend the Seasonic, I bet. Edit: just realized that two of them didn't met the criteria of modularity. Opps. Here's a fully modular, Seasonic build, EVGA GS 550w : http://geizhals.eu/evga-supernova-gs-550-550w-atx-2-3-220-gs-0550-v2-220-gs-0550-v3-a1248301.html

Both the GS and G2 are excellent, but the G2, which is my favorite, is 165mm long. The GS is 150mm, and it's top notch, Jonny Guru is very strict when it comes to scoring, so most of the stuff that lowers the score is nothing that will affect performance in practice in the case of the EVGA GS 550W

The EVGA G2 power supplies are amazing, you can't go wrong with them.

For my personal system I am now at the point to decide between these two:

Corsair HX850i : 173,44€

EVGA SuperNova G2 850W: 137,72€

The question is of course which one to get.

I don't care about looks and length, as it's going to be stuffed away in the back of my case.

Jonnyguru gives them both similiar points. But is there anything that I have overlooked or is there a main difference performance wise?

I like to varied my recommendation from time to time (hence me showing quite a few units in my first post), so I would suggest looking at the RM850i instead. The HXi was release at during the 3rd quarter of 2014, while the RMi was almost a year later. The RMi is basically based on the same platform as the HXi series, and despite that the HXi being rank higher, Corsair / CWT had made some improvements to the platform which allow the RMi to yield better performance.

The RM850i would be 147.63€ - 10€ more. My post in another thread:

"Some benefits to the RMi are thanks to the relax fan profile (fan doesn't ramp up over 1000RPM), FDB fan (less susceptible to bearing noises), and wire fan grill (unrestrictive airflow that doesn't add more turbulent noises), it offer a more quiet operation. A price adder can be due to it being a multi-rail unit as well as the ability to switch between it and single rail mode via Link depending on your preference (as well as all of the other link features that I personally don't care for).

The EVGA does offer a longer 10 year warranty and better voltage regulation on the 12v rail. You could also say that since the EVGA fan can ramp up higher, it is capable of cooling the unit better."

Here's a few more input by some of the guys at Jonnyguru: http://www.jonnyguru.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12612

Whichever you get though, they are both excellent power supplies.
