fx 4300 vs g3258

Ok so im having a pretty heated debate with @Ronnie76 and i want to put it to end.

 

The debate happened when someone asked for a 200 dollar gpu and the topic came to upgrade his cpu instead. ronnie suggested he should get a g3258. i said that its not WORTH upgrading to the g3258 because the man has a pretty weak gpu. i think the guy should get an r9 380 or 960 and not upgrading his cpu while ronnie says to get a g3258 which i think is not worth it. what do you guys think?

FX 4300 will do better when 4 cores are used. No question really. Pentium struggles with a decent bit of games due to it only being able to handle 2 threads - look at GTA V - stuttery mess.

Look, your better off getting an older Phenom II X4 and an AM3+ motherboard that is compatible for your friend. The FX 4300 makes no sense at all when you have the older Phenom II X4 line performing better than it. What would the budget be?

What GPU does he have?? Regardless the G3258 is a better chip. This depends on many things, like budget, intended usage, and other things. We need a bit more info

true, but it will still hold back anything better than a 380/960 in AAA games. @1080p ofc

It depends really. If he can get a bit of money for his old card, CPU and board, then buying a used G3258, used board and used GPU could be a better solution.

honestly, the g3258 has the better upgrade path and when oced to 4.0 ghz or 4.2  on the stock cooler will do very well

 

bu against a fx 4300, it doesnt do much considering 2 v 4 cores and will perform similar, TERRIBLE

Not really. Considering the FX 4300 is a dual core with its ALU split in 2, most of the time it will effectively run as a dual core as quite often 1 ALU will have to wait for the other one inside the module to finish its task because of the shared resources. Either way a Phenom II will provide a better gaming experience than the Pentium or the FX 4300.

but it didn't used to be. Rockstar broke something, and haven't fixed it.

The FX chip will definitely do better in games like BF4, as they use multiple cores very well. For games that are poorly optimised for multiple cores, the Pentium will do better. If they're that close in a game that uses cores well, I would probably go for the Pentium.

also what games, as I have have a g3258, and in games like titanfall, yeah... wish I had at least hyperthreading, but if he is IDK... using his pc as an emulator, then the 3258 is miles ahead of the fx chip.

Look at the benches. if the Pentium had HT it would be better but it's not.

There's no point in buying a new AM3+ system. It's basically a dead platform. Investing in a G3258 seems like a better deal and it will pull ahead in single thread optimized games. Not to mention that with going the Intel route, you can upgrade later to a better CPU.

Look at it this way, Take a Phenom II X2, split the ALU of each core in 2 and you have the FX 4300-except with lower single threaded performance and therefore worse multi-threaded performance than the derivative CPU.

The Pentium is an i3 without the hyperthreading. And you need to remember that cores aren't everything.

Which is why I'm recommending a Phenom II X4-the IPC is very close to if not higher than that of my Xeon X5450, and while it did bottleneck my GTX 970 by up to 21%, it still provided an enjoyable gaming experience with all of my games.

and games are now refusing to run on dual cores and the stuttering and minimum fps are terrible. the 4300 will pull ahead.
