So, what specs do I need for this to work flawlessly?

I know I could use my old laptop etc etc. But I want to do more.

1. Run XBMC

2. In-Home streaming flawlessly (as possible).

3. Run Plex client (not server).

Because I already have an Nvidia GPU etc, I am also considering the Shield Console. (Which removes the need for XBMC and plex as it has Netflix/amazon/plex apps etc). I was thinking of the forge TV. But, I will be spending the same ~$200 between the unit/controller/stream service fee anyway. Lastly.... there's that little steam link dealio.... If it includes or will include Netflix/Prime/Plex options and not purely a streaming device....

What are folks experiences and recommendations?

I had a really bad streaming experience on anything that is less than 5ghz Wireless AC on the receiving end and wired connection on the streaming computer.

Steam's streaming is inferior to that of Nvidia, Steam's streaming stutters and is of very bad quality compared to Nvidia's shield portable. I don't know how the Shield console will do though.

steam is meant to go over a wired LAN, where nvidia has worked hard on squeezing it into a system that works over wifi.

when you hook up both sides to gigabit lan its actually pretty decent.

Yeah, I should mention that I can easily have it hooked up to gigabit LAN (or 5GHz AC1900).
