Hi all,

I want to upgrade my current build to 64GB memory and new CPU. I was recommended to use i7 5930K or i7 5820K.

Are these good choices?

I currently have i7 2600K and Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming. My CPU has a Corsair cooler but I don't know which model. It has a single big fan in the back and the piece that goes on top of the CPU is round. Can I use it for these new CPUs? Or should I get a new one?

Which RAM and mobo should I get? For mobo it would be nice to have 128GB memory, tons of SATA 6Gbs ports and USB3.0 ports, not 2.0.

Thanks a lot :)

i feel like whatever workload you are doing, an i7 2600K with 64GB ram isnt quite that balanced... (okay, maybe modded minecraft...)

also, the more dense ram DIMMs get capacity wise, the more pricy they get, giving X99's 8 DIMM slots a very clear advantage.

motherboards are rather personal preference, depending on the exact things you need.

as for ram, i personally really like corsair LP (or LPX for DDR4) because they're not too bad looking dimms available in different colors, and still low profile to fit under coolers.

That i7 only supports 32GB. http://ark.intel.com/products/52214/Intel-Core-i7-2600K-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-3_80-GHz

Also 5820k only supports 64GB so for >64, you are looking at Xeons.

If you want tonnes of SATA ports and high ram capacity, I would consider a server/workstation grade board with high capacity DIMMs or a HBA.

Thanks guys. I know 2600k doesn't support 64GB, which is also why I want to upgrade it. X99 is the same socket as 5820k and beyond?

Also I mentioned 128GB support because since a lot of mobos support it, I thought maybe there will be a non-xeon one in the future.

Why do you need so much RAM?

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

X99 chipset is using socket 2011-3 which supports i7 extreme editions (5820k, 5830k and 5960x) and most Xeons (E5-26xx v3) *Someone correct me if I'm wrong*

For mobo I suggest you MSI x99a sli plus. It has 8 ram slots and can have up to 128gb of ddr4. I don't know which cpu supports 128gb, but i'd suggest you looking at 5690X.

CPU: i7 5820K Motherboard: MSI x99A SLI PLUS RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR4 2800mHz (4x4gb) GPU: MSI GeForce  GTX 980Ti Case: NZXT S340 Storage: 840 Evo 120gb and WD Blue 1TB  PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA G2 850W CPU Cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock 3

What about this memory?

http://cipc.com/kingston-hyperx-fury-ddr4-black-hx421c14fbk8-64-64gb-kit-8x8gb-ddr4-2133mhz-cl14-1-2v-memoire.html

I found that one locally so not sure if it's a good one compared to G.Skill.

I am also not sure if I should go with i7 5930K or i7 5820K. The 3d app I am using has a lot of parallel operations but also a ton more that are single threaded so OC'ing would be nice with my Corsair cooler or a new one if that will help. I read that 5930 OCs a lot better.

I think I have H50 or H55, it has a round part on the CPU, not square. Would the latest H110 or so give me a lot more room for OC? 4.7 would be nice if I can do it.

the h110 would be nicer to have, or the nzxt kraken x61.

the 5930k tends to  oc better than the 5820k, and has more pci-e lanes, for multi gpu setups.

The gskill ram has higher freq, and almost the same cl, but the kingston will also do the job.

Thanks man. Is there a different between H110 and their latest GTX? I checked on youtube and GTX is said to be very loud? Also how does Nzxt fare against Corsair coolers?

So far based on your recommendations and some research I did, particularly on memory and mobo, I settled on these:

Core i7-5930K directcanada
G.SKILL Ripjaws 4 Series 64GB (8 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2800 (PC4 22400) newegg.ca
ASUS X99-A/USB 3.1 LGA 2011-v3 Intel X99 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard newegg.ca

Since I am in Canada, they come out about $1815.

What do you guys think? Is this a good build?
