Kinda noob question here.

Hey guys,

if I have a 7.1 headset plugged into my front panel USB does it still have 7.1 capabilities? I have 7.1 integrated in my motherboard, but I'm not sure if it works in a usb port that's not directly on the mobo. Thanks!

Should add; I'm planning on buying one, but if 7.1 doesn't work on front panel usb I'll just buy a stereo headset.

If headphones have a USB port, it means they use an integrated sound card - nothing to do with the one on your motherboard.

But I question your choice of a 7.1 headset.  Fake surround is kinda junky...

Yeah what headset is it?

HyperX Cloud II

This isn't real surround - it's fake.

Some people like it but I personally can't stand it.  Maybe you want to try it out... it's only £20 more than the Cloud 1 and if you don't like it, just use it without the USB dongle thingy.

As you probably know, no headphone has real surround.

Not a single one?  I assumed maybe some crazy expensive something might have it.

Either way they're so close to your ears I think regular stereo is just fine.  But of course the number is lower.

It is physically impossible.

One perceives surround by different timings from the speakers going into each ear.

So if a person only had one ear, they would not heard surround, even with speakers

Most spatial perception comes from the difference in the times at which sound reaches your two ears. With headphones, any given driver can only be heard by one ear, which make that effect impossible to replicate, as noted above.

This is why simulated surround in headphones is actually better than those 7.1 headphones with multiple drivers. The simulated surround can create a delay between left and right channel to simulate a speaker position.

What? Multiple driver or single driver, DSP is at work. There is no difference except marketing.

Well, if there is 3 different drivers in each ear, and each is sent a specific channel (fl, fr, sl, sr, sw) and there is no virtual surround, then it will sound like stereo.

That's why virtual is better

Yeah, but no headset is like that. See what I'm saying? They all use DSP.

Yeah.

I was not sure what they did.

But then there are other problems with multi drivers, usually they are not good.

Not necessaril, there are 7.1 headsets with no internal sound card, they just connect to an existing sound card as a 7.1 system. Anyway multiple drivers never really make sense in a headphone for surround, with dsp there is no need for them anymore.

No, there aren't. Multi-driver headsets cannot deliver virtual surround without DSP. It's a matter of physics. If you know of a counter-example, I'd be very interested to hear.

That does not necessarily stops gaming headset manufacturers from doing it anyway. The Razer Tiamat seems to be a good example. Razer does not mention any kind of sound post processing so it seems like it just runs off the 7.1 sound of the sound card.

It doesn't. There is a controller box, which certainly contains a AD->DA pipeline.

Razer acutally states that the control box is for volume adjust and switching input, it also speaks of discrete surround instead of using dsp. http://www.razerzone.com/gaming-audio/razer-tiamat-71 Do you have any source that the control box actually contains a dsp?

You mean the link for the razer explanation? Looks like it can not be linked directly because it is a pop up window on the website. You can see it though if you go on the razer link I posted in the previous post and click the "what is surround sound" link.
