Multiple Crossfire Configurations

Is it possible to have more than one Crossfire (or SLI) configuration in one system? For example, could someone set up two arrays of R9 390x's in two way Crossfire instead of four way Crossfire? As Linus points out in this video (linked below), one system can host one array in two way SLI and another array in two way Crossfire. Is it possible to host two ways of two way Crossfire (or SLI)?

Furthermore if this is possible, could someone set up two arrays of four way Crossfire? (Yes. I know this is rediculous and would be costly money, power, and heat. I'm just exploring GPGPU possibilities.)

I don't see a problem with dual 2-way crossfire, at least from a technical specifications of it. However, you cannot maintain more than once instance of CCC (Driver control program for amd) at any one time, meaning if you tried to have two 4-way crossfire arrays then the drivers simply wouldn't support them as crossfire.

I'm not sure if the software would let you maintain two different arrays, it most likely does not.

For Crossfire, it shouldn't be possible, since the cards communicate through the mobo itself. Unsure about SLI.

You can't have 2x 4-way Crossfire because you a. don't have enough PCI lanes and b. don't have enough physical slots.

Bitcoin miners work differently, that's why you can have a card populate every PCI/PCI-e slot

Currently, I definitely have the pcie slots and pcie lanes to support 4 gpus. i7 4820k and asus p9x79 ws. Can run 4 cards in x8/x8/x8/x8. So two 2-way crossfires are theoretically possible if the software could support it.

4 GPUs is possible. I was talking about two 4-way Crossfires, which totals to 8 cards. THAT is impossible with the current tech

I think what he means is that he has 4 cards then instead of having 8x/8x/8x/8x you have two batches so batch 1: 8x/8x and batch 2: 8x/8x

What if one were to use four cards with two gpus each? Four R9 285x2 on the asus p9x79-e ws which claims it can run all four in x16/x16/x16/x16.

Dual GPU cards act like single GPU cards, afaik.

Using the P9X79-E WS should, indeed, allow you to use it in x16/x16/x16/x16

So we agree? Someone could put 8 gpus on one board. But the capabilities of this is restricted by the software running this.

If by GPU you're referring to the chip itself, then yes. It SHOULD be possible, but only by using 4 dual GPU cards. Otherwise, you're SOL.

pretty sure you wont get x16/x16/x16/x16 since mobo chip gonna detect all pcie full and pcie 1-2 and 3-4 share normally the same bus so its gonna run 4 times x8 cause CPU cant handle 4time 16

The asus p9x79-e ws works by using pcie switching. Only 32 lanes are used at a time but they are switched around. Like an Ethernet switch, but for pcie. In effect, all cards are x16. (I presume this. I don't have a source but it makes since. Either way the r9 295x2 can run off x8 so not too much a difference in terms of gpgpu.)
