So long story short. I believe My motherboard (I don't think my CPU) is holding my system back...

System spec's:

Coolmaster CM690III Case

Currently Running Windows 10 64 bit

AMD Phenom II X4 840 processor (Stock 3.2ghz)
X2 4gb Rendition DDR3 Ram Sticks = 8gb Ram.
ASRock N68-S3 UCC Motherboard
Galax GTX 960 GPU

Kingston V300 SSD

Cougar RS 750 Watt PSU

1TB Hitachi HD 5400RPM

Logitech Z506 5.1 Surround Sound Speakers
LG DVD Burner/Writer Drive

Palsonic tftv6042fHD
World Of Tanks Edition 2014 DeathAdder Razer Mouse. And Mouse Pad.

Logitech G930 Headset.

I'm not getting the expected FPS in my games. So, The question is...

If I was to buy a new motherboard. Say this for example : http://www.newegg.com/global/au/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130849

Or much much later on an I5 4690k and compatible motherboard.

One will the AMD board be worth getting as a stop gap, till I can afford a better I5 down the road.

And.. If I was to change the motherboard in my system will it require a new Windows 10 license? (I upgraded from a OEM version {I think} of Windows 7 HP 64bit).

I don't want to have to pay the extra 90$ for a new OS and $500+ in the future for a new I5 board and CPU...

My new Gaming PC.

If you wanted your current motherboard will hopefully be able to run the FX series CPU's (I know mine did way back when I had a Phenom II x4 840) and you could use that for the time being. Although I really don't recommend any of AMD's CPU's at the moment, if you dont have the cash for a new motherboard and CPU now, just get an FX series CPU.

Desktop: i9 11900k, 32GB DDR4, 4060 Ti 8GB 🙂

Can you explain to me why the CPU does not run at 100% then? I would assume if it was the CPU..It would at least be running HOT or being fully utilized..

I personally hate this motherboard...I have multiple USB 3.0 ports that can not be used.. and its getting close to 8 years old.. I would much prefer to upgrade to a newer motherboard even if it was just for features alone.

No I cant im not a coder, but I can tell you that a motherboard can in no way directly effect your cpu, it can only indirectly effect it via how much it lets you OC a cpu.

Ram has next to no baring on your FPS.

That leaves 2 things, video card and cpu, your video card ia new and only slightly behind one of my 680s and I know a 680 doesnt struggle with modern day games. So if its the gpu its not functioning correctly.

Or its your cpu, which is 6 years old which from what I can tell is comparable with about an Intel core 2 Quad QX6700 which I know for a fact is well below the modern games min specs

I cant promise this but it shouldnt, I have limited exprence with win10 but when I went from some...AMD dual core to a 1090T I didn't need a new license but that was windows 7

Everyone says no its tied to the motherboard and motherboard alone but I doubt the majority of them know definitively and are basing that on how older versions of windows work.

But I personally think you will be ok. You might even be able to get away without having to reinstall windows technically...mind you I still would.

But all that being said I wouldnt bother with a modern AMD chip, you are just beating a dead horse at that point. save your money for Intel

Possibly the cheapest way of gaining performance is to buy the mobo below and OC.

Its not that. I'm on windows 10 now, after "upgrading" from a OME version off windows 7, From what everyone said above if I change my motherboard it ask for a product key again to active windows 10. Which because windows 10 does not give you one, I would need to buy another license.

That's what the guys above said anyway...

Grab the previous version of Windows you had before 10 as an ISO, use your key for it again, should be fine.

I have a Backed up Windows 7 from before windows 10 became available, So I guess I could try and boot into that drive...But I have no idea if Ill be promoted for a key. And if I am, the OEM key that I have will no longer be accepted because its been exchanged for a windows 10 "upgrade" AFAIK anyway.

And to be honest, I like windows 10. So going back to windows 7 now will feel a little like a downgrade.

Motherboard can effect CPU. For example if his MB has a overheating north-bridge, it can throttle to avoid damage to MB and thus tank the performance overall.

Op you don't need an i5 for gaming, i3 is enough. If you need an i5 for it's for cores or just need the extra power, then get that, otherwise take an i3. No matter what you don't get FX CPU for gaming, especially if you say that your MB is crap.
