Have R9 390 problems?

Hi, I wanna to build my first PC and I need to help. I don´t know what GPU I have to choose. I wanted R9 390 but lot of people say that AMD GPUs have problems with games, drivers and that they are absolutley shit and that I have to buy gtx970. I saw lot of benchmarks and r9 390 is simply better than gtx970 in performace and equal in price. It´s true that are AMD GPUs that bad? Thank you for answer.

Most people who say that are fanboys or don't know much about PCs, AMD hasn't had big driver issues compared to Nvidia for recent years

Those are fanboys for you, Nvidia might have a driver advantage in some games but this won't make their 970 better than the r9 390.

Those comments are exaggerations and hilariously false. Drivers are a complicated thing. Nvidia does have better optimization for DX11 but AMD is still competitive because they overbuild their videocards to compensate for it. This is seen in DX12 tests where AMD gets a massive boost because they are no longer held back by DX11 overhead but Nvidia doesn't gain much as they have nearly perfected DX11 optimization. So the 390 is still the better option as it is better at current DX11 games and will be way better with DX12

I have upgraded my GTX 760 to R9 390X recently, and I have heard that amd drivers suck all the way before upgrading. (I wanted a 390 but it was out of stock back then, so i got the 390X)

Now , after I've been using my 390x for almost 2 months , I can tell you this :

1) Reliability / Stability : I barely had crashes with the 760 card and I barely have on the 390X as well, (But it happened to me at most on both cards while I was using some on screen FPS viewer(third party))

 

2) Performance : DX11 and most games are more optimized for NVIDIA , but, due to the fact that the 390x is sooo powerful , I don't have any performance issues. (using mantle is great performance wise but very few games support it, I believe DX12 will solve this matter)

 

3) Just FYI, I've built 3 PCs recently (2 cousins and 1 for my brother) , 2 with "Sapphire R9 390" and 1 with "Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 960 4GB".

On few games the performance of the 960 was close to the 390 while on many others the 390 was much faster. (I'm comparing this with 960 in order to illustrate the DX11 optimization advantage for NVIDIA)

Nothing wrong with AMD - the time where their drivers were unstable was 3-4 years ago and even then it was blown out of proportion.

A 390 is probably the best bang for the buck card at the moment.

Rarely with old games I heard people have issues and when a game is brand new game the optimization can be a bit delayed but nope no total failures...

Totally, first there is this annoying bug with recent driver in Chrome where your screen will flicker and TDR happen. Secondly they allegedly stopped/postponed optimizing driver for their slightly older card to make their new card look much better. 3rd, they have a history of killing their older gen card with nasty WHQL driver like Catalyst 196.75 and Catalyst 320.18.

If he is gonna use his pc to record his gameplay he should go with 970 because of the Shadowplay. Best recorder! for SURE

I'd use OBS honestly - and Audacity for audio - don't really like Shadow Play's quality - for some reason it breaks when recording Witcher 3's hairworks. I mean breaks quite badly.
