Im surprised no one has mentioned League of Legends o.o

 

Try League of Legends and/or DOTA 2, I recommend LoL , its easier to learn (at least, IMO)

 

My Recommendations (In order of most favorite):

1. League of Legends (Free)

2. Left 4 Dead 2

3. Counter Strike: Global Offensive 

4. King Arthur's Gold (Free, MUST try, the kind of game u get addicted to for months, and not the game u get addicted to for a week than quit) -http://kag2d.com/en/

A few games off the top of my head that are centered around a story and haven't been listed already:

 

LA Noire

Deus Ex & Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Fallout 3 & New Vegas

STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl & Call of Pripyat (I recommend modding these two up)

Alice: Madness Returns

Dark Messiah Might & Magic

Divinity II

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines (fantastic game)

 

I also highly recommend Mount & Blade: Warband, although it's more of a "write your own story" kind of game. You should also give a Total War game a try if you're into strategy games at all. I know Empire and Napoleon Total War both have demos on Steam, but a lot of people don't consider those to be the greatest in the series.

 

If you're looking for something different, give Legend of Grimrock, Trine, FTL, Hotline Miami, and Expeditions: Conquistador a try.
