1000W or 850W ?

Go to solution Solved by AresKrieger,

OK so what i read that eveyone says 850w is good for a 5820k 2 gtx 980 sli  on custom watercooling and overclocked

Yep unless something is broken it should never go above 800 W under even the worst conditions

750W

EDIT: Just so long as it's a good PSU I mean
If you want to go with Diablotek then even a 2kW PSU won't be enough :D

Im doing a x99 build and can't decide on 1000w or 850w power supply. The build is going to have a 5820k and 2 gtx 980s in sli. Everything will be custom watercooled and overclocked.

750W is plenty.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

Yeah 1000 is way overkill 750 should be ok, assuming the pumps don't use 100+ get a high grade 750

I would suggest  850w, just to be safe(dual 980 ti can draw even 800w when oced)

EVGA G2 or GS in that case.

The site has changed....

I forgot to say it will be in the 900d with 13 fans and watercooled. extreme power supply calculator says i need 883w.

PSU calculators are retarded - really really really retarded. Get an 800W if you want to be sure but a single fan uses 5W - 13x5=65W for the fans.

I'd say it depends on a price, the 850W should be enough, but if the price difference between it and the 1000W one is only marginal, then get the 1000W. Alway better to have more headroom for future uprades, it doesn't draw any more power than you need anyway...

dont use PSU calculators

they are always wrong

they need to account for cheap crappy PSUs

but as long as you get a good quality PSU you can ignore those calculators

look on google images for "980sli power consumption"

that will tell you how much you really need, based on real world testing

A single 980 uses 240-ish watts. 2x use about 480. + 200 for everything else = 680. + 65 for the fans = 735. And keep in mind that's only if you get an EXTREME OC on stuff

Yeah I agree but 100 headway really won't affect the effeciency more than 2% so if he want to spend the money 850 will be fine

If he gets a SeaSonic S12G 750W it's like he's buying an 850W. Depends on the PSU
