PSU and I would strongly suggest selling the 960 you currently have and getting a 390/970

960 SLI is pointless

My rig with 1 960 and an i3 draws less than 200 watts. You should be fine with SLI 960's on that power supply however it would be recommended that you upgrade it. Also to the people who are saying "sell the 960's get a 390 / 970" 960's in SLI (in games that support SLI) typically perform significantly better than the 970 and close to the 980.

SLI is janky - not going to scale 100% always. In Tomb Raider it scales around 75% which is optimal. In other games it scales from 10 to 20% which is a case of diminishing returns really.

Pretty much all dual GPU configs are a bit janky. Xfire is a bit better, but still not as good as a single GPU, ever.

If you check out SLI benchmarks with the 960's the performance scales rather well.

AC Unity is one of the most broken games ever, it's not even worth bringing up. Why don't you look at all the other benchmarks like BF3 and BF4 where frame rates nearly double, along with BioShock Infinite, Far Cry 4, and others.

I did - and I think we both have to agree that SLI is not a 100% guarantee of a performance boost - usually it takes some time with games for it to get working properly and almost always that's some time after launch. Some games fair better than others.

It's not 100% but it's close (within 15%). SLI 960's is a great option ONLY if you already have one, there's no point in selling your GPU when you can just buy another one.

Considering his board only sports CF since SLI requires special treatment - I think selling his card and getting a 970/390 is a better bet

Also - that PSU is a damn fire hazard.

I may be wrong but.... he's after 3 monitors aswell...not said the res, but lets assume 1080p as its pretty standard, the card has what, 2GB of vram?,.

SLi does scale ok with some games.. but with most no it doesn't,.. theses no point in selling your card, and buying another one then going sli,...IF you already have a decent card and want more life out of it later on, but he's already limited because of what he wants to do for his "cockpit setup" , SLI 960's is really a bad idea, hes basicly buying a patch job, when he can sell his 960 and use the money he was going to buy another one with and get a reasonable 970, or AMD equivalent, then sli that later on that would make more sense then throwing money at a lower card and hoping to magically run 3 29inch monitors, plus his games in what i assume is reasonable fps and graphics settings. Personally that would make more sense, then HOPING the game dev's optimise SLI for the games he wants to play, if they dont he's still in the same situation he is now =/,..

like i said I might be wrong but just my thoughts, its your money man look at the facts listed in the benches, and see if that is worth it to you, and see if there are any surround setups with sli 960's on youtube and see the performance they are getting and make a well informed choice.

best of luck man, iv been in that situation before, and its not fun :)

edit, just looked at benches, lol, seems the 960 sli will be "ok" for surround :) my mistake , but still point still stands a single 970 is almost as good as 2 960's, so later he can then buy another 970 asnd still be up there in hardware terms wheres the 960 will be dragged faster due to the vram, and the power they have already =/

I'm starting to smell fanboy. You're relentless.

I'm not being a fanboy, I'm being factual. The performance increase after SLI'ing GTX 960's in most games is significant. To go through the extra effort of selling your GPU to buy a different one proposes two major problems.

  1. When you sell your GPU you'll have to wait until your new one arrives which will mean you won't be able to game for a few days
  2. You might not be able to sell your GPU

That board doesn't support SLI so you would need a new motherboard and maybe a new psu. I would recommend just selling the 960 and getting a single more powerful card

1.he'll have a better experience after those few days though.

2.ebay, it will sell.... if not then he can still go for your SLI idea ( or his i forget) , nothing lost :)

3. as pointed out by others... he will need a new mobo... and for a 960... buying all that is just dumb

Selling cards is easier than you think. List it on Amazon and it will go within 2 weeks.

You need a business account to sell on Amazon, Ebay you might get scammed and Craigslist isn't very safe.

You've never used eBay, have you? I've sold and bought a Zotac 650 Ti from eBay, it worked very well, and i played plenty of games on it. Not to mention, I bought at least 20 more items, and sold an HDD and some laptop RAM as well. eBay sellers are held accountable. First of all, your money is put on hold for 21 days unless you are an experienced seller, and second of all you have to link your bank information to eBay so that they KNOW you won't scam someone.

How good is the SLI scaling when the board only supports one card though?
